While positive representation is improving, the LGBT community is not often portrayed in a positive light in anime/manga mediums. Often gay, lesbian ad trans characters are played for comic effect or overly flamboyant. Queer characters are often given tragic endings which subtly reinforce cultural norms outside if niche markets such as yaoi, yuri, underground works, ovas, doujinshi and other non-mainstream avenues.
