Man of Steel presents Superman as a strangely apathetic character when it comes to humanity, but in this moment Clark could have easily moved Zod's head (since he had the strength to snap his neck) or as Eric pointed out, he could have covered Zod's eyes. Zack Snyder's interpretation and desire to go with a dark character works for most of his movies, but Superman is much more hopeful and this is one of the many reasons the #movie wasn't as loved as #dc hoped.
