Gotenks was only comic reliefe in Dragonball Super Super Hero. When the fusion went wrong, Gohan and Piccolo were able to save the day against Cell anyway and Gotenks was able to help distract Cell Max giving the heroes time to execute their plan. Most fans missed that the movie poster actually hinted at this though...
