For one thing, this Peter Parker had no Uncle Ben moment and he had a mentor in Tony Stark. More importantly, this Spider-Man's MJ was vastly different from the red-headed vixen Spidey fans were used to. It wasn't so much the racial difference, but the character difference. Point plank, MJ in the MCU was unlikable. Spider-Man No Way Home changed that and made her an extremely likeable character.
