Now, with the help of a local cooperative, we are working together to generate direct benefits for the people of Camino del Mayab. We are creating opportunities for employment by growing tourism, and renovating & repurposing old haciendas into communal kitchens, tourist palapas, schools, and libraries.
Mission: Our 35 Sunder Energy volunteers began renovating the Cacao school in Abala that has been in ruins for decades! Projects included waterproofing the classroom roofs, extending the outdoor dining area, clearing up rock and debris to make the grounds more accessible and safer, and creating a space for gardens. These amazing volunteers also donated bikes to each of the 25 students at the school, classroom materials for the teachers, and snacks and drinks for the coordinators throughout the week!
