[00:01:21] If this is your first time joining us here on the Goosebumps Crew Podcast, I want to sincerely welcome you all.

[00:01:25] As always, if you are or have ever been a fan of the popular Goosebumps series of books, or the monster franchise that those books spawned,

[00:01:35] Because as I always say, me, Bjorn, and Nick are some of the biggest Goosebumps nerds on the entire planet.

[00:01:39] We can talk about Goosebumps for hours on end, and that's exactly what we do here on this podcast, funny enough.

[00:01:45] Every week, we have a brand new episode talking about everything Goosebumps from the books, TV shows, movies, video games, merchandise, whatever it is.

[00:01:52] If it has Goosebumps in the name, we're going to talk about it until you cannot stand to hear the name Goosebumps anymore.

[00:01:59] So with all that said, if you end up liking today's episode, make sure you have a like and comment.

[00:02:43] We thank you in advance for your support.

[00:02:45] We are still in the month of October, and that means that Goosetober is still trucking along healthy and alive.

[00:02:53] And if you guys have been paying attention, if you guys have been tuning in, we've done two episodes in Goosetober so far.

[00:03:00] First, we did a top 10 list on our top 10 books that we would have loved to see as episodes of the 90s Goosebumps television series.

[00:03:08] Last week, we took a look at the fan-made documentary Goosebumps, the saga of scares with the original creator, Matt Rasmussen, who is himself a big Goosebumps fan.

[00:03:18] That was a really fun one.

[00:03:19] So make sure you guys check that one out.

[00:03:20] So today is a very special episode because not only are we going to be talking some Goosebumps as usual, but we are actually celebrating a very special anniversary.

[00:03:30] The anniversary in question is the nine year anniversary of the release of the first Goosebumps feature film, which released on October 16th, 2015.

[00:03:40] And it is now officially been nine years since that movie came out.

[00:03:44] Not to make any of you at home feel old, but we certainly feel old.

[00:03:49] And of course, we have to celebrate this milestone in a big way.

[00:03:53] That's why we're very happy that Avery Jones is joining us once again here on the podcast, the puppeteer for Slappy in those movies himself.

[00:04:01] Avery, thank you so much for joining us again.

[00:04:03] We're glad to have you back.

[00:04:04] I'm happy to be back.

[00:04:05] I'm the first repeat guest, right?

[00:04:07] I'm indeed on my, my, my second sequel.

[00:04:11] Perfect.

[00:04:12] Yeah.

[00:04:13] The second Goosebumps sequel.

[00:04:15] Awesome.

[00:04:16] Or otherwise, but yeah, we're very glad to have you back to talk some more Goosebumps with us.

[00:04:22] And like I said, today is a very special day because it's been nine years since the Goosebumps movie hit theaters across the world for most parts of the world.

[00:04:30] Some of them got them three months later, but we don't talk about that.

[00:04:35] But no, it's, it's crazy that to think that this movie is been around for that much longer.

[00:04:41] I remember when it hit San Diego Comic-Con, that was the first reveal for the Goosebumps movie to the world.

[00:04:48] That was where Jack Black made his big appearance.

[00:04:51] All the Goosebumps monsters appeared, including Slappy the dummy himself, who, as I said, you were the main puppeteer for in all the promotions and in both movies.

[00:05:00] So you played a pretty big role in those movies.

[00:05:03] Now, we already did, of course, our standard reviews for both Goosebumps and Goosebumps 2 Haunted Halloween in a previous episode.

[00:05:12] As I said, we also had Avery on another episode earlier where we did sort of a standard interview.

[00:05:18] So today we're going to be taking a look back on the history of this Goosebumps movie, taking a look at some, some concept art from the movie, some videos and promotions that led up to the premiere.

[00:05:28] But we will be asking just a few more questions for you, Avery.

[00:05:32] This time we asked our listeners to submit some questions to ask you here in this episode.

[00:05:38] And to start things off, we're very curious.

[00:05:41] How did you get into puppeteering as a profession and a hobby?

[00:05:47] So my dad always had puppets around the house.

[00:05:50] He did puppets for local church things and nursing homes and outreach and things like that.

[00:05:58] So it was it was normal to me.

[00:06:00] So I just latched onto it somehow.

[00:06:03] And I've never considered any other job option.

[00:06:08] So this has been my my my trajectory since I did my first show when I was five years old with my silly little.

[00:06:19] I think it was a Winnie the Pooh hand puppet for church.

[00:06:23] So I have not I've not been without a puppet for most of my life.

[00:06:30] Absolutely.

[00:06:31] And what kind of projects did you do before you got involved with Goosebumps?

[00:06:35] Did you do any other sort of shows or movies or any sort of stage shows?

[00:06:40] So I got started in theater in high school where I built a couple of very, very bad puppets.

[00:06:48] But you had to start somewhere.

[00:06:50] I started there.

[00:06:51] I got a professional job right out of high school as a puppet builder for the Georgia State Theater,

[00:06:56] the Springer Opera House, where I built puppets for a bunch of their productions.

[00:07:01] Little Shop of Horrors, Cinderella, The Borrowers.

[00:07:05] There's a handful of things there.

[00:07:07] And then at the same time, I started doing local TV.

[00:07:12] So we've got a Christian kids TV show called Heath and the Checkershoe Band that a friend of mine and I produced out of Columbus, Georgia,

[00:07:21] that's gone international on Christian television networks.

[00:07:26] But yeah, nothing obviously to the scale of Goosebumps.

[00:07:31] But I wasn't a stranger to how these things are made, if that makes any sense.

[00:07:37] I knew how I've been in front of a camera before.

[00:07:41] Mm-hmm.

[00:07:42] Well, and the, you know, you may start small, but even, you know, starting in high school stage show eventually led you to being in a super big budget and popular movie.

[00:07:53] So, you know, those experiences can build up and add to your resume and maybe lead you to some, you know, some big avenues down the line.

[00:08:02] So absolutely.

[00:08:03] Absolutely.

[00:08:04] I think everyone needs to do at least a little bit of high school theater to see what it does to you mentally.

[00:08:10] But it's a good place to start for me.

[00:08:18] Yep.

[00:08:18] Absolutely.

[00:08:19] And another question that was submitted.

[00:08:22] So, you know, in movies nowadays for, you know, the last few decades, really, CGI is sort of taken over like big creature effects and like super big action scenes.

[00:08:34] Gone are kind of the days of where like everything was practical, everything was a practical effect, a puppet, a costume, a makeup effect.

[00:08:44] As a puppeteer yourself, are you hoping to see those sort of avenues of effects make their way, make sort of a big comeback in film at some point down the line?

[00:08:54] Oh, I think it will.

[00:08:55] Like everything else circles back the nostalgia.

[00:08:58] I think people are smart enough to know when they're watching a movie what's real and what's not.

[00:09:06] And I think a very recently there was an interview with Jenna Ortega about Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, where she talked about how great it was having practical things on set.

[00:09:18] So even the big stars like to have something that they can they can work against.

[00:09:22] So I think that'll all come back.

[00:09:25] And then there is puppetry in places, even when you're not aware of it in movies, the Amazon Lord of the Rings series.

[00:09:33] There's some of those some of the magic is practical, like pots and pans moving around.

[00:09:40] There's actually puppeteers there. It's not digital.

[00:09:42] So I think it is still there.

[00:09:45] It's just very secretive about where it hides.

[00:09:48] But there have been a couple of movies this year and I'm spacing on the names of the one of them had Benedict Cumberbatch in it, but I can't recall what it is.

[00:09:56] It was a big puppetry to do.

[00:10:00] So there's there's it's out there.

[00:10:03] And I think I think it's coming back.

[00:10:04] The Jurassic Park movies, I think, have some practical things that I'm like in this this this round.

[00:10:10] So the puppets puppets are are on the way back in.

[00:10:14] Yeah, for sure.

[00:10:15] Well, that's the thing, too.

[00:10:17] You know, it seemed like for a while in the 2010s, like CGI was completely taking over.

[00:10:22] Everything was a computer effect for better or for worse.

[00:10:25] Like, obviously, computers can look good sometimes, but the magic of movies, in my personal opinion, is just having things physically there.

[00:10:35] And I'm glad you brought up Beetlejuice Beetlejuice because that movie does have a lot of practical effects.

[00:10:40] It's you know, it's Tim Burton back at the helm.

[00:10:42] And, you know, he he has his ways with making practical effects work in his movies even now.

[00:10:49] And it's just it's so good to still see it when it does pop up.

[00:10:52] And you're right. It can be a little secretive sometimes, but it is there and it does.

[00:10:56] It does seem like it is kind of making like sort of a resurgence over CG.

[00:11:01] I think a lot of people are kind of CG out or it's just becoming easier to see that.

[00:11:07] Yeah, exactly.

[00:11:09] Can you get that's the thing?

[00:11:11] Like that's where you get movies like to throw it still with Michael Keaton.

[00:11:15] If you've ever watched the Flash movie that recently bombed and came out with Ezra Miller and Michael Keaton reprising his role as Batman.

[00:11:26] The CGI in that film was atrocious.

[00:11:28] I mean, literally there was stuff from the 90s Goosebumps show that had better effects than a multimillion dollar film.

[00:11:39] I think a lot of it looks the same.

[00:11:41] I think that's my my boredom with with CG things is how many times are we going to see the portal in the sky and the you know, you can only make explosions look cool a couple of times.

[00:11:54] You know, there's not a whole lot to to sweeten the deal on that and puppets.

[00:12:01] I think there's a lot of uses for puppetry that can be sweetened by CG.

[00:12:06] So I think a mix is a great.

[00:12:09] I'm not anti CG at all.

[00:12:11] I think, you know, adding eye blinks into Ewoks and Star Wars and things like that are is a great way to make something alive in a way that practically on the set for safety.

[00:12:23] Couldn't, you know, blind those guys.

[00:12:25] But yeah, it's it's I am CG out.

[00:12:30] That's a good a good term.

[00:12:32] Yeah.

[00:12:33] And you know, you're starting a trend there.

[00:12:36] Isaiah.

[00:12:37] But it's like it.

[00:12:40] I struggled trying to find you.

[00:12:42] I struggled trying to see you down the original classic E.T. because I was like, I don't want to watch the CGI version that came out in like what?

[00:12:50] Two thousand and one to something like that.

[00:12:53] So I like really wanted to watch the original version.

[00:12:56] And I struggled finding a copy because like every version they brought out is just like the new CGI version.

[00:13:02] And I was like, no, I want to watch the original 80s, you know, like with the puppet.

[00:13:06] And he looked really scary in the old one, too.

[00:13:08] He's freaked me out as a kid.

[00:13:11] So I'm glad that I was able to finally pick one up.

[00:13:14] It was like some special edition 40th anniversary something.

[00:13:17] Well, the the guys that built the slappy puppets and several other creatures for the second Goosebumps movie built E.T. for an ad.

[00:13:27] I want to say it was a Thanksgiving commercial or Super Bowl commercial or something.

[00:13:31] And he's all practical.

[00:13:33] And it is a beautiful puppet like his his mouth forms syllables and he's a wonderful puppet.

[00:13:40] So if you haven't seen that spot, you can look that one up.

[00:13:43] It's I feel like it's I think it was for Thanksgiving.

[00:13:47] They aired it during like the Macy's parade or something.

[00:13:49] And yeah, go home for the holidays or something like that.

[00:13:53] The puppet is absolutely beautiful.

[00:13:55] Exactly.

[00:13:56] And that's the interesting thing about modern technology is that, you know, certain resources were limited back in like the 80s and 90s.

[00:14:05] But now you have like advanced technology where you can make like some amazing things with like animatronics and puppets.

[00:14:13] Like, I mean, I think about like the stuff I see at like Disney World.

[00:14:17] Like, yeah, those animatronics are just like spectacular.

[00:14:22] Like they look like real.

[00:14:25] So it's like it's there that the people can people can make these things and they can make them look so unbelievably good, which is why, like, I just hope that it's there and it's kind of coming back.

[00:14:39] But I hope it becomes a little more mainstream, like how it was back in the day.

[00:14:44] And CG and I like CG, too.

[00:14:46] But, you know, relying entirely on it can sometimes, you know, alter a product in a little bit of a negative way.

[00:14:55] Depends just just think about Spirit Halloween to animatronics are accessible to everyone.

[00:15:02] Now, anyone can go in and buy one of those and take it apart and turn it into something else.

[00:15:06] So that technology and that tech is is in everybody's hands now in a way that she probably won't be for a little bit longer, another 10 years, probably before you can make a movie like that on your phone.

[00:15:21] But yeah, I just go into Spirit and seeing some of the even as basic as they are like this is Disneyland in somebody's house now.

[00:15:30] Like this would have blown somebody's mind, you know, 50 years ago when they opened up Magic Kingdom that you could bring a six foot tall.

[00:15:40] I don't know what he is, a ringmaster or something. That's the big one this year in Spirit into your house.

[00:15:45] Yeah. Well, and one more I want to say that like Wicked Makers, I don't know if you watch them on YouTube or not.

[00:15:53] They're a pretty big channel, but they that's what they do.

[00:15:56] They they take certain props even from Spirit and make something new out of it.

[00:16:02] And just recently even they took I think it was a Home Depot one, though.

[00:16:06] It was the pirate captain that they stripped down and then made a life size animatronic foxy from Five Nights at Freddy's.

[00:16:14] And it looks amazing, you know, but that's the thing with the animations and stuff, you know, that's everything that these props do now because they have servo motors and, you know, they can blink now and everything else like the Frankenstein's monster.

[00:16:29] I think Home Depot has blinks and moves its mouth and kind of looks around and it's like, oh, my gosh, you know, and Spirit even put out one that tracks your movement as you're moving around.

[00:16:39] Have you seen that one? I think it's called Nibbles the Clown.

[00:16:45] Like he just follows you and it's like really eerie, but I can see that technology and a bunch of other stuff now.

[00:16:51] And it's like, OK, that'd be really cool. But for a two hundred dollar price point, like that's wild.

[00:16:58] That's so reasonably like cheap. Have you seen that buddy the elf you can get? How terrifying.

[00:17:04] Oh, yeah. Oh, man.

[00:17:06] I was like, hey, it's like somebody proves that in is not on correctly.

[00:17:14] Yeah, I know.

[00:17:16] It's terrifying.

[00:17:19] Yeah. More terrifying than, you know, some things that go bump in the night.

[00:17:23] And speaking of speaking of bump moving on the Goosebumps, which actually was a movie that combined a lot of CG creatures with many practical creatures, big costumes, makeup effects.

[00:17:37] It was always something that interested me and especially for how many monsters there are in the Goosebumps movie.

[00:17:45] But of course, as we said ad nauseum at this point, you were the puppeteer for Slappy.

[00:17:50] And actually, in terms of the sequel, we found out you actually did puppeteering for a few other creatures in the in the sequel, especially.

[00:17:58] Right.

[00:17:59] So what was probably like the best part of getting to work on those movies, would you say?

[00:18:05] I always like the stuff where everybody's on deck.

[00:18:10] So like the in the second movie, the example I always uses the Chew neighborhood where all the monsters are out and all the trick or treaters are there.

[00:18:19] There's just so many like like teams and pockets of people.

[00:18:24] It was so fascinating to watch all of the the different puzzle pieces fit together in that.

[00:18:29] I like I like the teamwork effort that that goes into all these things that as an audience member, you're definitely not going to be aware of.

[00:18:37] Mm hmm. But that's always the stuff I love.

[00:18:41] And especially like when even when Slappy had like four puppeteers on him for certain shots, I just love any time you can collaborate with people for one big idea.

[00:18:53] I think that's the always the best.

[00:18:55] Mm hmm. Speaking of which, another question that was submitted to us.

[00:18:59] How many were there like different versions of Slappy used in in the first film?

[00:19:04] Like maybe one for just general like puppeteering?

[00:19:07] Was there one for like standing that sort of thing?

[00:19:10] There was only one functional puppet for the first movie.

[00:19:15] We had another that was a stand in essentially for lighting purposes.

[00:19:20] So I didn't have to sit while they moved lights around and set up green screens and things.

[00:19:26] But that he got very little little screen time, if any.

[00:19:33] But yeah, it was just the one puppet for the the first movie.

[00:19:37] Yeah.

[00:19:39] Can you say it was like a ten thousand dollar puppet?

[00:19:43] I was told that the the Slappy puppet for the first movie was a fifty thousand dollar puppet.

[00:19:48] So fifty thousand.

[00:19:49] Yeah, I was way out.

[00:19:50] Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.

[00:19:52] Oh, oh, oh, oh, oh.

[00:19:53] Oh, my God.

[00:19:55] That is.

[00:19:56] I wouldn't be able to afford one of that.

[00:19:58] Hey, Slappy's a big star.

[00:19:59] He's worth a lot of money.

[00:20:02] That's why I had to have someone make one for me.

[00:20:04] People ask all the time.

[00:20:05] Why didn't they give it to you?

[00:20:07] They're not going to give me that.

[00:20:08] No, they're not going to give that away.

[00:20:10] That's why there's going to have to do what Adam West did.

[00:20:14] Yeah, exactly.

[00:20:15] That's why you're going to have to do what Adam West does.

[00:20:17] And every time they're like, hey, can you play Slappy again?

[00:20:20] Yes.

[00:20:20] But put it in my contract that I get Slappy at the end of this.

[00:20:24] So only do it.

[00:20:26] Because that's how Adam West did goosebumps.

[00:20:28] He got to keep his.

[00:20:28] He said, I'll do it, but I get to keep my suit.

[00:20:31] Because he played the galloping gazelle in an episode.

[00:20:34] He was like, I'll do it, but I get to keep it.

[00:20:36] And sure enough, like they they let him keep it.

[00:20:38] So.

[00:20:40] Well, that's the difference between the big stars and someone like me.

[00:20:43] Ryan Reynolds walks off the Deadpool set in costume every movie.

[00:20:48] And if I did that, I would be in prison still.

[00:20:54] Oh, my God.

[00:20:56] Ryan Reynolds does it.

[00:20:57] He's just like, this is mine now.

[00:20:59] I'm surprised I didn't even let you keep one of the stand in Slappy props or something.

[00:21:03] Like one of the, you know, the cheaper ones, I guess.

[00:21:08] I don't know how much cheaper it would be.

[00:21:10] You know, like the price tag on that first one's wild.

[00:21:14] I don't know.

[00:21:16] What's the budget of how nice they're going to be to the lowly puppeteer?

[00:21:21] I don't need to get paid for this film.

[00:21:24] I just want Slappy.

[00:21:25] That's my payment.

[00:21:26] Yeah, that's the payment.

[00:21:29] What was your favorite thing to film a Slappy or even like your favorite line in the first film?

[00:21:36] I really liked the two come to mind.

[00:21:40] One of them is the scene.

[00:21:42] He's on top of the car addressing the group of monsters.

[00:21:47] And there weren't really as many there as there are in the final cut.

[00:21:53] But I did that, I think, for three days and completely blew my voice out and all sorts of stuff.

[00:21:59] But it felt very, I don't know, Shakespearean almost.

[00:22:04] I was on top of the car just projecting and shouting.

[00:22:08] And it felt very, it is Shakespearean, I guess, to Slappy.

[00:22:13] It's very important to him.

[00:22:15] It felt very epic at the time.

[00:22:18] And then his head spins all the way around as he watches all of them race.

[00:22:22] That was a fun one.

[00:22:23] And then the last thing I ever shot is all the interiors inside the haunted car.

[00:22:28] And that was the last day.

[00:22:30] So that was a lot of fun because I was able to actually relax.

[00:22:34] And I knew what I was doing at this point.

[00:22:36] So I got in a bunch of ad-libs.

[00:22:40] And there's even the line of I'd slow down, but I can't reach the brakes, I believe, is the line that got in.

[00:22:46] That was one of my ad-libs at the time.

[00:22:48] And it's just all the, it'll grow on you or whatever those corny kind of Joker-esque things.

[00:22:58] Check out my new bestseller.

[00:22:59] Yeah.

[00:23:01] I'm driving myself crazy.

[00:23:04] Yeah, yeah.

[00:23:04] All that stuff.

[00:23:05] That stuff was great.

[00:23:06] Oh, that's like, it's funny you brought up the Joker because Slappy in the first film really is kind of like the Joker.

[00:23:13] Especially with, we've talked about it before, but in the final version of the movie, it was Jack Black jumping over Slappy.

[00:23:23] But funny enough, the way that Jack Black voices Slappy almost sounds like Mark Hamill's Joker.

[00:23:28] So it's like...

[00:23:29] That was the best compliment I ever got in a review.

[00:23:32] There were people that didn't realize that Jack was the voice because my name was on other things.

[00:23:36] So they were like, Jones performs the Slappy with the enthusiasm of Mark Hamill's Joker or something like that.

[00:23:44] And I was like, I'm going to take that.

[00:23:46] Yeah, just take it in stride.

[00:23:48] Be like, thank you.

[00:23:50] I would.

[00:23:51] That's awesome.

[00:23:52] Did you see many of the earlier drafts of the script?

[00:23:55] Because one actually ended up online years ago.

[00:23:59] That actually had Cuddles the Hamster in it, for instance.

[00:24:02] Okay, I don't know that version.

[00:24:05] Yeah, it was...

[00:24:06] Do you remember...

[00:24:07] I think...

[00:24:07] Did you read it, Isaiah?

[00:24:08] I'm pretty sure it floated around.

[00:24:10] I feel like I've seen it before, but I don't remember...

[00:24:14] I feel like I skimmed through it, but I didn't remember Cuddles being in there.

[00:24:18] That's interesting.

[00:24:19] There was a scene in the police station where...

[00:24:22] I remember specifically reading where it was like...

[00:24:25] Cuddles has them pinned down while Slappy's basically got his foot on one of the sheriffs.

[00:24:30] Telling him it's my town now.

[00:24:32] And I was like...

[00:24:33] And I was like, man, that was such a cool scene.

[00:24:35] And Cuddles is almost like his henchman holding them down while Slappy's just...

[00:24:41] Like the brute henchman.

[00:24:43] That'd be pretty cool.

[00:24:44] Yeah.

[00:24:45] We talked about this movie before.

[00:24:46] I was like, Slappy in the first film was more like Mob Boss Slappy.

[00:24:50] Yeah, yeah.

[00:24:51] It was.

[00:24:52] It was hilarious.

[00:24:56] If I may interject here, I happen to have an early copy of the script from one of the passes.

[00:25:03] This one is from...

[00:25:04] This was a revision while we were filming.

[00:25:07] So this one is from April of 2014.

[00:25:12] And I believe this scene is in one of the books, the novelization.

[00:25:17] But when we filmed it, but it got cut and it's not on any DVDs anywhere.

[00:25:23] So Slappy has escaped.

[00:25:25] He's taken all the books.

[00:25:26] He's burning the books in the yard.

[00:25:28] Stein and the kids run out and say he's burning all the books.

[00:25:31] And then we cut to Slappy and he's rampaging, driving all over the town with those lines I was just talking about.

[00:25:38] Exterior road night.

[00:25:40] A cyclist pedals his 10 speed on an evening workout.

[00:25:43] Headlights illuminate behind him.

[00:25:45] He waves the car around, but nothing.

[00:25:47] Go around, cyclist writes.

[00:25:50] He looks over his shoulder.

[00:25:51] It's the haunted car with Slappy behind the wheel.

[00:25:54] He honks and laughs and flashes his lights.

[00:25:57] I'm a lawyer and I will sue.

[00:26:00] Slappy speeds up, sending him off the road and into a ditch.

[00:26:04] Slappy pulls up, the window rolls down, and Slappy leans out.

[00:26:08] I'm sorry I cut you off.

[00:26:11] You were saying?

[00:26:14] We filmed all of it.

[00:26:15] We had a stunt guy that we watched.

[00:26:18] I watched them drive the guy into a ditch.

[00:26:21] It was cool.

[00:26:24] Yeah, that's so cool.

[00:26:25] I do remember that.

[00:26:27] That's so cool, man.

[00:26:29] That's really cool.

[00:26:30] That's awesome.

[00:26:31] Little things like that, you know?

[00:26:33] I wish they released that on the DVD.

[00:26:36] That would have been cool.

[00:26:36] But maybe they'll do a Snyder Cut version of the Goosebumps movie.

[00:26:41] I was just thinking of the Letterman Cut.

[00:26:42] Release the Letterman Cut.

[00:26:44] Letterman Cut.

[00:26:45] Hashtag release the Letterman Cut.

[00:26:48] There's a lot of stuff.

[00:26:49] And I don't know what was filmed because this wasn't monster related.

[00:26:53] But there's a lot of stuff with the kids and the coach.

[00:26:58] Champ is like the towel boy for the football team.

[00:27:02] And things that we didn't touch on at all.

[00:27:05] I think there might be a little bit of that on the DVD or the Blu-ray or something.

[00:27:10] There's a lot of bullying deleted scenes, actually, with Zach.

[00:27:14] And what was his name?

[00:27:16] The guy that played the bully?

[00:27:17] The big guy?

[00:27:19] I don't know.

[00:27:20] I think you're talking about the guy that gets sucked out by the praying mantis.

[00:27:24] Yeah, that guy.

[00:27:25] Green time in the deleted scene.

[00:27:28] Caleb Emery, I believe, is the actor's name.

[00:27:31] Oh, I see.

[00:27:32] Yeah, no.

[00:27:33] There was...

[00:27:33] I do remember the bullying stuff.

[00:27:36] And man, it's been a while since I looked at the deleted scenes on the DVD.

[00:27:41] I need to go back.

[00:27:42] But I do remember reading the novelization.

[00:27:45] And there are different things.

[00:27:47] And I was assuming...

[00:27:48] It had to be from an earlier draft or something.

[00:27:51] Because I know there's at the end when they're all getting sucked back into the books.

[00:27:55] Because in the final movie, Slappy latches on to Stein.

[00:27:59] And he's just like, Slappy is not happy.

[00:28:02] And Stein just kicks him.

[00:28:04] But apparently in the novelization, Slappy is clawing his way, trying to get away.

[00:28:10] Yeah, let me see what that says in here.

[00:28:12] And then Stein comes up and just stomps his fingers into the ground.

[00:28:16] It's just like, now we're even.

[00:28:18] Yeah, he breaks his fingers, so I'll break yours.

[00:28:21] Yeah.

[00:28:22] Oh, yeah, that was fucking cool.

[00:28:25] Oh, man.

[00:28:27] Yeah, that's a lot of...

[00:28:28] I think why they took that out, but I would have liked to have seen that.

[00:28:30] I would have liked it.

[00:28:31] It would have been something really dark.

[00:28:33] Just being like...

[00:28:34] It's just like...

[00:28:35] It sounds like an action you could see.

[00:28:38] Right.

[00:28:39] That's a Arnold Schwarzenegger line.

[00:28:41] Repulsed by the slime, Stein reaches back in and grabs his glasses from inside the blob.

[00:28:46] Slappy jumps onto Stone.

[00:28:48] Stein has a stranglehold on his neck.

[00:28:51] Slappy's not happy!

[00:28:52] Neither is Stein!

[00:28:53] Stein, using all his might, peels Slappy off of him and kicks him to the ground.

[00:28:57] Stupid dummy!

[00:28:58] Slappy screams and is sent tumbling into the vortex.

[00:29:01] As Slappy is sucked away, his wooden fingers dig frantically into the ground, stopping him.

[00:29:05] He starts clawing his way back.

[00:29:07] Stein steps down on Slappy's fingers, breaking them.

[00:29:10] Now we're even!

[00:29:12] Slappy lets go and slides back into the vortex.

[00:29:14] See you in your dreams!

[00:29:17] Oh, wow.

[00:29:18] I love that.

[00:29:19] Honestly, I think that would have been super, super cool to see that.

[00:29:23] Just like little things, yeah, in between.

[00:29:26] But I also love how Slappy, like, when he gets kicked, he just, like, hits a tree and he's just like, oh!

[00:29:33] There's something really funny about, about as intimidating and frightening as he is, you could still dropkick the little...

[00:29:42] You could just punt him like a football.

[00:29:44] Yeah!

[00:29:45] Yeah!

[00:29:45] I always thought that with the Chucky films, too.

[00:29:47] I'm just like, why don't anybody just, like, punt him?

[00:29:49] Yeah.

[00:29:50] Like, his arms...

[00:29:51] Yeah, just, like, pick him up and just pull them like this.

[00:29:54] Where he's, like, beating up Mini-Me, and it was like, if I was in a Chucky movie in real life, and it was just, like, the scene where he's beating up Mini-Me, like, in the...

[00:30:02] In the...

[00:30:03] And he's just, like, beat his head in the fridge, and he's just kicking him around, and, like...

[00:30:07] I'm like, if I was in a Chucky movie, this would be what I'd be doing.

[00:30:10] I'm like, true, like...

[00:30:12] And Slappy has no bones, so, like, his arms...

[00:30:15] He can't really hurt you too bad, because he will go, you know, Toy Story rolls at some point.

[00:30:23] Well, there's a whole thing in the 90s TV show where they, like...

[00:30:27] They, like, pin him down, and then they tie up his arms and legs, because he's got no bones, so they just...

[00:30:32] He's just got, like, his arms and legs tied like this.

[00:30:34] He's like...

[00:30:35] But his arm's, like, hanging out the side of the...

[00:30:38] Yeah, they close the case on his arm, and his arm's just like...

[00:30:41] It looks kind of, like, creepy in an awkward sort of way, the way it's, like, when he's got his arm just, like, hanging out.

[00:30:48] And it's like, ugh.

[00:30:50] So, another question that was submitted.

[00:30:52] Did you ever read the Goosebumps books or watch the TV show as you were growing up?

[00:30:57] So, I grew up very sheltered, conservative parents, so I was not allowed to read the books.

[00:31:04] I read the main Slappy books once I got cast, but...

[00:31:09] I'd seen the show at some point.

[00:31:14] I don't remember if it was at a friend's house or at a library or something.

[00:31:17] I do remember seeing it, because I remember that the puppet changes size when it goes from being the actual dummy to the performer in the costume.

[00:31:26] And I remember thinking that was very funny.

[00:31:29] So, I knew who he was, but I didn't know, you know, all the lore or anything like that.

[00:31:35] Mm-hmm.

[00:31:36] I guess one of the things I had to ask...

[00:31:39] I'm surprised I actually didn't ask this last time.

[00:31:41] So, you read, obviously, like, all the original, like, Nylod dummy books.

[00:31:44] But when you read the first one, were you like...

[00:31:47] Slappy's hardly in there.

[00:31:48] He's not even in there.

[00:31:50] I call it the Friday the 13th one of Goosebumps, because, like, Friday the 13th, the main villain is not the main villain in the first one.

[00:32:00] Right, and that's, I think, why the Funko Pop is called Night of the Living Dummy and not Slappy.

[00:32:05] So, is it Slappy?

[00:32:07] I know that gets controversial.

[00:32:10] If it's Slappy or not.

[00:32:12] Maybe it's secretly Mr. Wood and nobody wanted to tell anyone.

[00:32:16] He's in the disguise.

[00:32:17] But when you read the second book, you would have been like, oh, okay.

[00:32:20] Okay.

[00:32:20] Okay.

[00:32:21] And the third one.

[00:32:21] Oh, okay.

[00:32:22] Here we go.

[00:32:23] Here we go.

[00:32:24] Here we go.

[00:32:24] Because it was confusing, because I didn't know why the series started with Living Dummy 2 instead of the original.

[00:32:32] Is that right?

[00:32:32] There's not a number one series?

[00:32:34] Yeah, the TV series, the second one was the first Slappy episode.

[00:32:39] So, we talked with, actually, the director of that episode about it, because we asked him, like, was the first book ever considered for a TV episode?

[00:32:47] And he said it was.

[00:32:48] But they were like, we just, we didn't know how to bring this to the screen, so a script was never made.

[00:32:53] We just skipped over to the second one.

[00:32:56] But it's interesting, like, to a newcomer, just be like, wait a minute, where's the first one?

[00:33:02] The jumping in point gets a little confusing, yeah.

[00:33:05] Exactly.

[00:33:05] Exactly.

[00:33:07] Another fan-submitted question.

[00:33:09] What other puppeteers assisted you in the movies?

[00:33:13] You said there was, at one point, four other puppeteers working on Slappy alongside you?

[00:33:18] Right.

[00:33:18] So, in the first movie, it was just me and a gentleman named Jake McKinnon, who worked with Ironhead Studios, who built the $50,000 dummy.

[00:33:27] It was just the two of us.

[00:33:30] And then the second movie, we had four, including me, at the max of those.

[00:33:37] We had Rick Gallanson, who was in charge of, he's the one that worked on that E.T. ad that I mentioned.

[00:33:45] And he's like robotics expert.

[00:33:48] You know, he tinkers around with those things just for fun and accomplishes things that I can't even fathom, just fiddling while he's waiting.

[00:33:58] So, Rick Gallanson, we had B.J. Guyer, who comes from the Muppet world, more like I do, the cute and soft, squishy things.

[00:34:10] And then we had, B.J. was kind of an addition.

[00:34:15] So, he wasn't there always with us.

[00:34:18] It was when Slappy has to do something like the video game controller in the second movie, where you can actually see his fingers moving.

[00:34:27] But, yeah, primarily it was me and Jake on the first film and me and Rick on the second film.

[00:34:35] So, that's awesome.

[00:34:36] I mean, it is funny sometimes just to think about how many people are controlling one, especially like Slappy, who's just like a little guy.

[00:34:46] A small thing? Yes, absolutely.

[00:34:47] And how many people it takes to operate like just one small little guy sometimes.

[00:34:52] But that's the magic of movie making.

[00:34:55] Absolutely.

[00:34:56] And all those guys, you'll see in the second film, they're also the monsters at the Chew House.

[00:35:01] So, there's a giant Grim Reaper that was one of our puppeteer guys.

[00:35:08] So, I was there doing face and robotic things for different monsters and they were actually inside the suit.

[00:35:15] So, there was a utility group there that jumped into every kind of costume and creature that we needed.

[00:35:24] I love that.

[00:35:25] When you have someone in the crew getting able to put on a costume and just sort of romp around in the background somewhere.

[00:35:34] That's cool.

[00:35:35] One more fan submitted question.

[00:35:38] What does it feel like to see like Slappy, Goosebumps, Merchant Stores now that you have been in both movies?

[00:35:46] Well, it's crazy.

[00:35:48] My favorite thing to do is if I see someone out and it's happening a lot because of Halloween, I'll see somebody out in a Goosebumps t-shirt or something.

[00:35:56] And I'll just go, cool shirt.

[00:35:57] And they have no idea.

[00:35:59] And I think that's a cool little secret I keep to myself sometimes.

[00:36:04] No, the craziest thing to me when we saw Slappy, they came out with Slappy Fabrics at Joanne Fabrics for the first movie.

[00:36:18] And so, that was the most weird and surreal to me because I go to Joanne Fabrics to buy my other puppet making materials anyway.

[00:36:28] So, happened to bump into him on the way.

[00:36:31] I have a Slappy pillow made from one of those fabrics.

[00:36:36] It sits right off in the side of my room.

[00:36:39] But for a while, these sat proudly on my bed.

[00:36:43] So, if anyone ever visited, they'd be like, what the hell is that?

[00:36:48] So, yeah, I've got some curtains made out of that.

[00:36:52] I've got a t-shirt.

[00:36:53] My wife has like Mickey Mouse ears with Slappy on them.

[00:36:57] So, we bought a lot of that.

[00:36:59] That was one of my favorites, though.

[00:37:02] It's just cool just to run into him.

[00:37:05] Like the Funko Pops recently and the coloring book that I was aware of because one of you guys posted it, I think.

[00:37:15] And then I just turned a corner and there he was.

[00:37:17] So, that's my favorite thing is when he surprises even me.

[00:37:20] I think that's really cool.

[00:37:22] And it's literally the movie Slappy on the couch.

[00:37:25] It is with freckles for some reason.

[00:37:27] But, you know.

[00:37:28] Yeah, that is true.

[00:37:29] It is.

[00:37:30] He didn't have those freckles.

[00:38:00] But, yeah.

[00:38:04] It's tired.

[00:38:05] I'm not played out.

[00:38:07] You're just like, oh, yeah.

[00:38:10] Well, that's awesome.

[00:38:12] Well, moving on.

[00:38:15] So, you know, we've been talking a lot about your experience with the Goosebumps movie.

[00:38:20] But, as we said, you know, this movie is now nine years old and that's crazy.

[00:38:24] Like I said, I remember when it first got announced.

[00:38:27] Even when talks were like first beginning about a Goosebumps movie coming out.

[00:38:31] More like a movie.

[00:38:33] Like who's going to be in it?

[00:38:34] Like what's it going to be about?

[00:38:36] Like what books are going to be in it?

[00:38:38] And it's actually crazy.

[00:38:40] We've talked about this before on the show.

[00:38:41] But there were many attempts at a Goosebumps movie dating all the way back to 1995.

[00:38:47] Before the TV show even came out, there was talks of a Goosebumps movie.

[00:38:51] For example, George Romero, director of Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead.

[00:38:56] Like many of the classic zombie movies.

[00:38:58] Really wanted to do a film adaptation of Welcome to the Dead House.

[00:39:02] In fact, as was recently surfaced.

[00:39:05] He wrote this giant like heartfelt letter to I believe the vice president of Fox Family at the time.

[00:39:14] Just expressing how much he really wanted to make a Welcome to the Dead House movie.

[00:39:18] Because I think he said his kid was like a big Goosebumps fan.

[00:39:22] And he just he really got into those books.

[00:39:25] And he just really wanted to do it for both himself and his kid.

[00:39:30] Unfortunately, it didn't come to be.

[00:39:32] And that honestly stinks because I would have loved to see a George Romero Goosebumps movie.

[00:39:38] The master of zombie movies, in my personal opinion.

[00:39:41] Especially Welcome to the Dead House.

[00:39:42] Because that was such a dark book.

[00:39:44] Because it was the first book and Stein hadn't found the balance.

[00:39:47] So he's admitted to this day like he felt like that one was a bit too scary.

[00:39:52] And that's when he had to sort of turn it down.

[00:39:54] And it's like it would have been so perfect for George Romero to do that.

[00:39:58] You know, it would have been.

[00:40:00] And it's book number one.

[00:40:02] So yeah.

[00:40:04] It's a shame we never got that.

[00:40:05] A missed opportunity.

[00:40:07] And then a second attempt came in 1998 when Tim Burton was set to direct a movie.

[00:40:12] No idea about what it would have been.

[00:40:15] They say that the plan fell through because they just didn't know what to focus the film on.

[00:40:20] They didn't know what book or monster it would be that would fit an entire movie.

[00:40:25] So plans fell through.

[00:40:26] And then eventually, as we discussed in a previous episode, there was a whole big legal battle.

[00:40:31] So all Goosebumps related avenues were canceled.

[00:40:34] So we didn't get a movie until 2008 when Sony got the rights and they were hired.

[00:40:40] They hired people to do the script and they were like, well, what should we do?

[00:40:45] Let's combine all the Goosebumps monsters into one movie and do something with that.

[00:40:51] And then in talks were going about soon, it would be announced that Jack Black would be starring in the Goosebumps movie.

[00:40:57] And then it wasn't until 2014 that we got the very first reveal of that movie with Jack Black, Rob Letterman and Slappy himself, of course, puppeteered by Avery, joining the fun with all the other Goosebumps monsters making an appearance.

[00:41:14] And it was glorious.

[00:41:17] I remember little 13 year old me.

[00:41:20] I was on the couch one day and I saw just these photos appear of the new Goosebumps movie.

[00:41:26] And I'm like, I didn't say anything.

[00:41:30] I was in shock.

[00:41:31] So I watched that clip like 50 times.

[00:41:34] Like I kept repeating it and repeating it because I was just like, oh, my God, like this is so surreal because it was a comic con to like, yeah, it just didn't feel real at the time.

[00:41:44] Definitely.

[00:41:45] So what we're going to take a look at first is some unused designs and monsters and that didn't make it into the final film.

[00:41:55] But there's a lot of concept art that is still working around on the interwebs.

[00:42:00] And we're going to take a quick look at some of those unused designs.

[00:42:03] Did they give you any kind of, I guess, approval authority when it came to Slappy's design?

[00:42:10] Like because you were puppeteering?

[00:42:14] The only say I really had, the design was locked in by the time I got involved.

[00:42:20] The only say I really had was how the mechanisms and the controls were set up and specific to my hands.

[00:42:28] So that's really all I had a say in there.

[00:42:32] And I had I got a say in who who I thought they asked, like, who makes ventriloquist dummies and things like that.

[00:42:41] And so I named off the guy that I would have wanted to work with that makes what I call the Cadillac of ventriloquist dummies.

[00:42:48] So I was like, you got to talk to him because he's the one that that, you know, that's the best of the best.

[00:42:54] And so he's the one that actually did the mechanics for the original Slappy.

[00:43:00] So I had the say in that and then worked with him on who or how the controls were set up.

[00:43:06] See, that's very interesting.

[00:43:09] Interesting.

[00:43:09] All right.

[00:43:10] You guys can reach out to him and say, like, hey, man, remember that job I got you back then?

[00:43:15] I need you to do the same thing for mine.

[00:43:19] For me?

[00:43:23] And I'll shout him out now.

[00:43:25] His name is Tim Selberg.

[00:43:26] He is not in the credits of the movie.

[00:43:28] He's in the special thanks of the first movie.

[00:43:31] But that's it.

[00:43:32] So his name is Tim Selberg.

[00:43:33] He runs Selberg Studios and out of Detroit.

[00:43:38] His puppets are great.

[00:43:40] And you've seen them before.

[00:43:41] Some of Jeff Dunham's characters are made by him.

[00:43:44] So, oh, nice.

[00:43:45] Thank you for doing that.

[00:43:46] You know his work.

[00:43:48] Yeah.

[00:43:49] I'll have to look into that now.

[00:43:51] So starting off, we have some early designs for what would be the body squeezers in the movie.

[00:43:57] I believe officially they were called the bug-eyed aliens.

[00:44:00] On the left, you have, you know, the pretty close to the final design.

[00:44:04] But on the right is a very different one.

[00:44:07] Sort of a big brain Mars attacks looking thing.

[00:44:10] That thing looks terrifying.

[00:44:13] It does look pretty creepy.

[00:44:14] I can't go through my window.

[00:44:16] Yeah.

[00:44:17] I love these.

[00:44:18] That's probably my favorite creature in the movies.

[00:44:22] The hands were green screen put in post.

[00:44:29] So they carried these big like placeholder hands.

[00:44:32] And then their heads were in hoods.

[00:44:34] And they didn't actually have the glass dome over the top.

[00:44:36] They just had the neck piece.

[00:44:39] Yeah.

[00:44:40] And then for Comic-Con, they built a set of the arms and a rubber mask.

[00:44:46] The guys at Ironhead built that so we could actually take those out into the world.

[00:44:50] Those guys, I can't imagine what they went through.

[00:44:53] There were four of them.

[00:44:54] And they were in those suits for days and days and days when they did not work a second on camera.

[00:45:00] So those were the guys that I got to hang out with the most was those 6'7", 6'9", giant guys that were in those suits.

[00:45:13] Yeah.

[00:45:13] I mean, it's cool too because as we'll see in a little while, a lot of those monsters were like super tall.

[00:45:20] They were towering sort of creatures.

[00:45:23] And it really adds to the sort of creepy nature of them.

[00:45:26] Here we have some early designs for what would be the graveyard ghouls.

[00:45:31] Pretty standard zombie designs overall, obviously without the blood and the gore.

[00:45:37] Yeah.

[00:45:37] You can't call them zombies.

[00:45:38] That was one of our rules in marketing.

[00:45:40] They had to be the ghouls.

[00:45:41] The zombie was too frightening.

[00:45:44] Yep.

[00:45:45] They look like businessmen.

[00:45:47] Like they all look like businessmen.

[00:45:49] Oh, wow.

[00:45:50] Here we have on the left, we have some early designs for Will Blake, a.k.a. the Werewolf of Fever Swamp.

[00:45:57] The one in the middle there is definitely a little more humanoid.

[00:46:01] I don't know how that would have looked if they went with that.

[00:46:04] I'm glad they went with the more wolfish one that still kind of looked human-ish in the final movie.

[00:46:11] And he was partially practical as well.

[00:46:14] That stunt performer was in a green suit.

[00:46:16] The track shorts are real and the tennis shoes and the socks were real and everything else is animated on top of his form.

[00:46:24] And on the right here, we have an early design for the blob that ate everyone.

[00:46:31] I believe, and you can probably tell by this design, that the character designer previously worked on the alien movies.

[00:46:40] It does look a little xenomorph-ish in its design.

[00:46:45] Why does it have ribs?

[00:46:46] It looks like a tongue.

[00:46:49] Yeah.

[00:46:50] It looks like a big tongue with ribs almost.

[00:46:52] And maybe that's what it was because it does come out of that big fun house face.

[00:46:56] Maybe it was meant to be a tongue at some point.

[00:46:59] Oh, yeah.

[00:46:59] That makes sense.

[00:47:00] If it came out like that, out of the mouth, yeah, that would have been really, that would have looked creepy ass.

[00:47:06] Yeah.

[00:47:06] Like, ugh.

[00:47:08] Here we have some sculpts of the Abominable Snowman, some early sort of design sculpts.

[00:47:14] We called her Abby on set.

[00:47:16] She was a broom handle with a giant cutout of a face on it because that one was purely CG, but they called her Abby.

[00:47:26] I love that.

[00:47:27] And then some more sculpts for the Werewolf of Fever Swamp.

[00:47:32] What happened to those sculpts?

[00:47:34] Where are they?

[00:47:36] I don't know, but I would really like that.

[00:47:38] The scene, I saw, I forget, I want to say it was Conan, one year for Comic-Con, went to Ironhead Studios to do some sort of, I think maybe they made him a bodysuit or something.

[00:47:51] And in the background are all the Groosebumps creatures and sculpts and art in the background.

[00:47:57] So I might try to dig that up and send that to you guys at some point.

[00:48:00] That's, I remember, I remember seeing that organically and going, that's him!

[00:48:07] That's him!

[00:48:08] That's him!

[00:48:09] And it was, there's the art with Slappy with the very, like, I don't know, the hair swoop, the very goth, emo-looking Slappy is in the background of that as well.

[00:48:19] I called that teenage Slappy.

[00:48:21] Teenage Slappy.

[00:48:22] That's what I'm calling.

[00:48:23] He's like teenage Slappy.

[00:48:25] Here we have Slappy.

[00:48:25] Well, that's Pennywise on the left.

[00:48:27] Yeah, it is very Pennywise.

[00:48:29] Honestly, it is Pennywise, essentially.

[00:48:31] It's Tim Curry Pennywise.

[00:48:32] That's Tim Curry Pennywise.

[00:48:34] Yeah.

[00:48:35] Definitely, you know, reminiscent of that, even in the final product.

[00:48:39] But that design even much more so.

[00:48:41] And then we have the Abominable Snowman, some sculpts in the middle, or some drawings in the middle.

[00:48:47] You can even see the actor to monster size ratio.

[00:48:52] The one on the blue background, I believe they use that in the books.

[00:48:57] And some of the marketing, because that looks very familiar.

[00:49:00] I think I have seen that in some of the books.

[00:49:03] It looks like Harry's and Harry's.

[00:49:04] He's on the movie box set.

[00:49:05] Literally, like, there's Slappy's face on one side, and there's the vulnerable snowman on the other.

[00:49:10] And that's the exact image they reused, yeah.

[00:49:12] Okay.

[00:49:13] And I love the book's survival guide and all those.

[00:49:17] Yeah.

[00:49:18] And then right here on the right is an early design for what I would assume was Captain Ben.

[00:49:23] It's labeled as zombie pirate.

[00:49:26] It's very much more ghoulish in its design than in the final product.

[00:49:32] You said zombie, Isaiah.

[00:49:34] Oh, yep.

[00:49:36] It's a ghoul pirate.

[00:49:39] Hey, that's what it was labeled.

[00:49:40] You can't believe me.

[00:49:41] It's a ghoul pirate.

[00:49:42] Yes.

[00:49:42] So that performer, I'm not recalling his name right now.

[00:49:47] He was an amputee, so he had a leg that they could wrap in greens or remove, depending on how his character was in the shot.

[00:50:01] And I remember the first time we'd worked with him for weeks, and we were out at that scene with Slappy on the car with all the books burning and all the creatures around.

[00:50:10] And the first time I saw them take off his prosthetic leg, me and all of the performers around me just went, oh, because we had.

[00:50:20] Ironic.

[00:50:23] Here we have some more early illustrations for some goosebumps creatures like Fifi the vampire poodle on the far left there.

[00:50:31] Definitely more terrifying in the face, in the design.

[00:50:36] We have those eyes.

[00:50:38] Yeah, we have the witch doctor, Professor Shock, one of the jack-o'-lanterns, the executioner, and another designed for Murder the Clown.

[00:50:48] I love that drawing of the jack-o'-lantern.

[00:50:51] I love how gangly he is.

[00:50:53] That looks cool.

[00:50:55] I like that, too.

[00:50:56] Yeah.

[00:50:56] They're really cool.

[00:50:57] The real dog that played Fifi there was very, very skittish, ironically.

[00:51:04] So there was an evening we were at the high school, and this stormed so bad, and it rained.

[00:51:11] And because it's summer in the south, and that was going to come out of nowhere.

[00:51:16] And the dog was just terrified and, like, shaking in the corner and had, like, the biggest entourage around it trying to take care of this dog.

[00:51:24] Then I saw the movie, and it was like, that dog was frightened of rain.

[00:51:29] Oh, my.

[00:51:31] That's adorable.

[00:51:32] Sign of a good actor.

[00:51:33] Fifi.

[00:51:33] Fifi.

[00:51:34] Fifi.

[00:51:37] All right.

[00:51:38] When they say action, it's a totally different animal.

[00:51:41] Absolutely.

[00:51:41] Now, here we have a few more drawings.

[00:51:44] Of course, we have Captain Ben and Cronby, and I don't know what that is supposed to be on the right.

[00:51:50] Oh.

[00:51:51] I just imagine in the dark, you hear crying in a corner, like the witch from Left of the Dead.

[00:51:58] And then that's what you encounter.

[00:52:00] That's what I see here.

[00:52:01] What this was supposed to be.

[00:52:04] Is she the same size as Slappy?

[00:52:07] Is she that little?

[00:52:08] Like, that would also be.

[00:52:10] Oh, Mary Ellen.

[00:52:11] Ellen Dole?

[00:52:12] Yeah.

[00:52:13] Is that Mary Ellen?

[00:52:14] Maybe Mary Ellen?

[00:52:14] Who knows?

[00:52:16] Was going to make a camera in there.

[00:52:18] But, I mean, it's a really creepy design.

[00:52:21] I've not seen that one before.

[00:52:23] I know.

[00:52:24] Yeah.

[00:52:24] Is that based in any book that you guys know of?

[00:52:27] I have no idea.

[00:52:28] God, I would assume it'd be like a ghost maybe of some kind.

[00:52:32] But, man, for the life of me, I cannot think so.

[00:52:37] Ghost Beach?

[00:52:38] It could be Ghost Beach.

[00:52:40] Maybe one of the Sadler kids, something like that.

[00:52:43] They went for deep cuts.

[00:52:44] I mean, look at Cronby.

[00:52:46] Yeah.

[00:52:47] Give yourself goosebumps.

[00:52:49] It wouldn't have been surprising.

[00:52:51] And then here we have, on the left, we have two designs for one of the vampires.

[00:52:56] And then on the right, we have some designs for the Scarecrow.

[00:53:00] That looks cool.

[00:53:01] I do like all of those drawings.

[00:53:03] Yeah.

[00:53:04] The Scarecrow looks both in this drawing and then the final product, I think, is a really

[00:53:09] well-designed monster in the movie.

[00:53:12] Here we have a scene concept footage.

[00:53:15] Many more body squeezers.

[00:53:17] And apparently in one of the original drafts, they were going to use these phaser or slime-ish

[00:53:24] guns instead of ice guns.

[00:53:27] Sort of like those Mr. Freeze sort of guns.

[00:53:30] The Letterman Cut.

[00:53:31] The Letterman Cut.

[00:53:32] This exists.

[00:53:32] It's out there.

[00:53:33] I want to see it.

[00:53:35] I remember seeing concept of the town covered in slime rather than ice.

[00:53:41] I think that would have been cooler.

[00:53:43] That does exist.

[00:53:44] That would have been way better.

[00:53:45] In slime.

[00:53:47] Yeah.

[00:53:47] It makes sense.

[00:53:48] It's goosebumps.

[00:53:49] Green ooze.

[00:53:51] I don't...

[00:53:51] Must be a good.

[00:53:52] Yeah.

[00:53:53] Yeah.

[00:53:53] Could have been.

[00:53:54] Here on the left, we have...

[00:53:56] It looks like instead of the plants coming through, there are large octopus tentacles.

[00:54:01] That's something that gives yourself goosebumps.

[00:54:03] I almost think about Deep Trouble with the big sea monster.

[00:54:08] I think so, at least.

[00:54:09] And then we have on the right a concept art for when the bombable snowman gets sucked back

[00:54:14] into the book.

[00:54:15] I love the...

[00:54:17] Yeah, that's sweet.

[00:54:18] Framing on this shot.

[00:54:19] Yeah.

[00:54:19] I would watch an actual animated series of this.

[00:54:23] Can they make an animated version of the Goosebump movie?

[00:54:26] I would watch it.

[00:54:28] In this style, I'd totally watch it.

[00:54:30] Oh, yeah.

[00:54:31] Here we have some early 3D models for the Werewolf of Fever Swamp.

[00:54:36] On the left is an in-color version, and then on the right are sort of the turnarounds.

[00:54:41] Looks pretty similar to the final product.

[00:54:44] Yeah.

[00:54:46] And then here...

[00:54:47] Oh, wow.

[00:54:49] PBS Kids.

[00:54:50] Yeah.

[00:54:50] That's Disney Slappy right there.

[00:54:52] Well, you guys were talking about the emo Slappy.

[00:54:56] That was designed by someone named Navelle Page.

[00:54:59] We found this on his Instagram, actually, funny enough.

[00:55:02] So these are some early drawings for the concept.

[00:55:05] And then here is the final version.

[00:55:09] And there was apparently a model made.

[00:55:12] So it does exist out there.

[00:55:15] Whoa.

[00:55:16] It's teenage...

[00:55:16] It really is like teenage Slappy.

[00:55:19] Like, that's what it is.

[00:55:21] That model on the far left, I swear they look like they modeled it after somebody.

[00:55:26] And I cannot...

[00:55:27] Like a young Jack Black, maybe.

[00:55:29] But...

[00:55:29] Well, who's the voice of this version of Slappy?

[00:55:32] Because this is a completely different vibe, right?

[00:55:35] So, like, is this the Mark Hamill Slappy?

[00:55:40] Or, like...

[00:55:42] Maybe.

[00:55:42] He's very spooky.

[00:55:43] It does look very...

[00:55:44] It does look like something Mark Hamill would voice.

[00:55:47] You're absolutely right.

[00:55:49] Maybe.

[00:55:50] Maybe he was considered at one point.

[00:55:52] I kind of want that puppet, man.

[00:55:55] Here we have some...

[00:55:57] On the left here, we have a design concept for the Annihilator 3000.

[00:56:02] And then we have some scene concept arts.

[00:56:06] Top is the cemetery.

[00:56:06] And the bottom is the carnival.

[00:56:11] So there's a fun house.

[00:56:12] The fairgrounds of the amusement park here, that was huge and up on the wall in the production office.

[00:56:19] So there is more to it.

[00:56:21] It goes at least to the left side there beyond that carousel.

[00:56:27] There is more to this photo somewhere out there.

[00:56:30] It might be actually cut off by the cropping.

[00:56:36] Oh, yeah.

[00:56:36] Here we go.

[00:56:39] Oh!

[00:56:40] There we go.

[00:56:41] There you go.

[00:56:41] Oh, wow.

[00:56:42] Okay.

[00:56:43] Oh, I got to get back to my spot.

[00:56:45] I feel like...

[00:56:46] When I first saw that in the trailer, I was like, oh, my God.

[00:56:48] It's Horrorland.

[00:56:50] It does look like that, doesn't it?

[00:56:52] Sort of run-down amusement park sort of thing.

[00:56:56] It looks really cool.

[00:56:58] I don't know for sure.

[00:57:00] I believe there was a map.

[00:57:02] They made a fake map of what this park was in its heyday.

[00:57:06] And I do believe it said Horrorland on it.

[00:57:09] So somewhere deep, deep background of the movie, canonically, it is Horrorland.

[00:57:16] Oh, wow.

[00:57:17] I would love to have this framed on my wall.

[00:57:21] It's great.

[00:57:22] And they built the physical...

[00:57:29] Totally lost my words.

[00:57:31] The Ferris wheel there.

[00:57:33] Only the bottom half existed practically where we were out in the woods to film.

[00:57:39] And then the top half was inside on the green so we could throw the kids up there when they're rolling through the forest.

[00:57:50] So anytime you see the full Ferris wheel here in the outdoors, the top half is a CG composite.

[00:57:59] But they made this out of...

[00:58:01] There's so much...

[00:58:02] I wish they did a walkthrough or something of it on camera.

[00:58:04] There is so much in this park.

[00:58:08] They built it from the scrapyard of Six Flags, which is just outside of Atlanta.

[00:58:14] So there's like Bugs Bunny World carrot rides in the back.

[00:58:19] And there's lots of artifacts and pieces from actual theme park history that they incorporated into this thing.

[00:58:27] It was a really cool place to walk around.

[00:58:32] It just seemed like really cool.

[00:58:34] It was nice that it was all...

[00:58:36] Or at least most of it was like a big set.

[00:58:39] And it just looks cool in the film.

[00:58:41] It looks almost like deceivingly warm with the lighting.

[00:58:46] But I love sort of the contrast here with the lights and sort of just the blue night and the moonlight in the background.

[00:58:54] It's gorgeous to look at.

[00:58:57] So if I'm not mistaken, the house of mirrors that's back there that you can see,

[00:59:02] I believe in our final version, it would be off camera in this picture.

[00:59:08] It's on the other side of the face, if I'm not mistaken.

[00:59:12] There was another structure on what would be the right side of this just off camera.

[00:59:17] I don't think there was actually a structure there.

[00:59:20] Because the house of mirrors, they come out of the mouth, right?

[00:59:23] Yeah.

[00:59:24] So it's like inside the fun house in the final movie.

[00:59:27] That's totally horror land then.

[00:59:29] House of mirrors.

[00:59:30] Like, I think that was definitely the reference.

[00:59:33] Like, it was there.

[00:59:34] So here we have another early concept for Slappy.

[00:59:38] This one looks definitely more in tune with the final version.

[00:59:41] Yeah, this was also up on the wall at the office.

[00:59:44] This was some of the first things I saw of him.

[00:59:47] I love that on a canvas.

[00:59:49] It looks very nice.

[00:59:51] It just looks like something you would have in your living room if you were a big horror fan.

[00:59:57] His bow tie is huge.

[00:59:59] His bow tie takes up most of his chest.

[01:00:02] And he's got super large buttons on his shirt.

[01:00:04] Like, those things are massive.

[01:00:06] They look like Oreos.

[01:00:07] Yeah.

[01:00:08] Yeah.

[01:00:09] His eye color looks blue in that picture.

[01:00:11] Here we have two animatic pictures here on the left.

[01:00:16] One is of the lawn gnome fight in the kitchen.

[01:00:20] The lawn gnomes here look a little more similar to what they do in the actual book.

[01:00:25] Like, they don't look as small.

[01:00:28] And it looks a lot more violent.

[01:00:31] Yeah.

[01:00:31] They have knees.

[01:00:32] Yeah, look at its frickin' pitchfork.

[01:00:35] That's crazy.

[01:00:36] And then another Slappy design down there on the left.

[01:00:41] I've not seen that one.

[01:00:42] Yeah.

[01:00:43] That's the emo Slappy, too.

[01:00:45] That's got the air wave.

[01:00:47] That one, again, it looks kind of like the Joker a little bit in the smile and the hair.

[01:00:54] And then here on the right, we have another photo of the body squeezer.

[01:00:59] This one looks...

[01:01:00] That's my favorite of that one.

[01:01:02] That's good.

[01:01:03] That's a trading card right there.

[01:01:05] That's a...

[01:01:06] Yeah.

[01:01:08] They did trading cards for the movie.

[01:01:10] That would have been so cool.

[01:01:11] That would have been an epic war.

[01:01:14] So here we have some behind-the-scenes makeup effects for some of the monsters in the movie.

[01:01:19] And I show these here also because the same...

[01:01:23] The same effect studio that did many of the makeup effects, funny enough, worked on this.

[01:01:30] This was the walk-around Slappy Mask for the Disney World attraction in 1998.

[01:01:35] And it was done by the same company.

[01:01:39] What's the company name on those?

[01:01:41] I have no idea.

[01:01:42] I have to ask the person that's supplying with the photos.

[01:01:45] Oh, okay.

[01:01:45] Who has that mask?

[01:01:46] What happened to it?

[01:01:48] I don't know.

[01:01:50] I don't know, but I really...

[01:01:52] Disney vault somewhere.

[01:01:54] Yeah.

[01:01:55] Man, that's...

[01:01:56] So I love...

[01:01:57] If you go back to the snake lady, that costume does not get enough screen time at all.

[01:02:05] The hair is snake skins.

[01:02:09] She is horrific in person.

[01:02:14] That actress was married to the stunt performer who was inside the bog monster.

[01:02:22] Oh, really?

[01:02:23] So they had that power couple dynamic thing going on.

[01:02:27] Yeah.

[01:02:28] Marianne here as the vampire on the left, she auditioned and did her screen test the same

[01:02:34] day I did for my first Slappy screen test.

[01:02:39] So...

[01:02:40] Yeah.

[01:02:40] It's one of the super coolest designs for the practical monsters in the film.

[01:02:46] Also, these were done by Fusion FX Shop.

[01:02:51] They did all of these and the Slappy walk around mask for the 1997 Disney show.

[01:02:58] Wow.

[01:02:59] It was so cool.

[01:03:00] They got to do two different Goosebumps products almost 20 years apart.

[01:03:04] That's cool.

[01:03:05] So right here, the next three slides, we have some back-to-back in-film shot and VFX shot.

[01:03:14] So on the left here, you have what you see in the final film of the Praying Mantis.

[01:03:18] And on the right is sort of how it looked in the VFX behind the scenes.

[01:03:22] Same thing for the werewolf in the grocery store scene.

[01:03:27] And then another shot here where the Praying Mantis bumps into the building and knocks it over.

[01:03:34] It looks like even the car itself was a little bit CG'd because you can't drive like that.

[01:03:39] So there was...

[01:03:41] I don't know if you've seen this.

[01:03:42] There was...

[01:03:43] Gosh, I can't remember what it's called.

[01:03:45] It's Oculus now.

[01:03:46] The 3D goggles.

[01:03:50] They did this sequence with Stein in the car.

[01:03:53] They shot special stuff for, I want to say, for the premiere and for maybe some malls.

[01:03:59] There is a 360 version of this scene.

[01:04:04] So that's why you see a lot of the Praying Mantis stuff done early.

[01:04:07] It's because they were repurposing it for more than just the film.

[01:04:13] Absolutely.

[01:04:14] Now here is a super special...

[01:04:16] Yeah, we just took a look at that actually in one of the video footage.

[01:04:20] We watched some people actually doing that.

[01:04:24] And we actually got to see some footage of it with Stein driving the car and you're in the passenger seat.

[01:04:29] So it was pretty cool.

[01:04:30] It was really cool.

[01:04:31] I got to try it out at Sony one day and it just...

[01:04:35] It was very strange.

[01:04:37] I'm not a video games guy anyway.

[01:04:39] But that was wild.

[01:04:41] Oh, what's this?

[01:04:42] I don't know this.

[01:04:43] So this was sent to me.

[01:04:45] We have five shots of...

[01:04:48] It says right up here title sequence.

[01:04:50] So I don't know if this was meant for the opening or the ending animation in the credits.

[01:04:55] But we know that at the ending credits of the movie, the Tim Jacobus artwork is animated as the credits play.

[01:05:01] This was the original version of that sequence.

[01:05:05] So you can see here, it actually starts with Slappy here with the Night of the Living Dummy 3 cover.

[01:05:13] But it also transitions into the Living Dummy 1.

[01:05:16] So they're sort of fused a little bit.

[01:05:18] Oh, cool.

[01:05:18] And Slappy and the other dummies are sitting inside of Dead House where they zoom out.

[01:05:25] That's cool.

[01:05:26] And then the reflection of Dead House is inside the lawn ornaments where the lawn gnomes are.

[01:05:34] And then we move on to the Abominable Snowman.

[01:05:37] He rips out the street lamp.

[01:05:40] Which leads to some...

[01:05:41] I believe those are just eyes looking, just generic eyes.

[01:05:45] But don't go to sleep's cover is shown in this sequence.

[01:05:51] And Curse of the Mummy's Tomb?

[01:05:52] Yep, Curse of the Mummy's Tomb.

[01:05:54] What?

[01:05:55] And Curse of Camp Cold Lake.

[01:05:57] Wow.

[01:05:59] I have a different idea of the Dormant art.

[01:06:01] Yeah.

[01:06:02] Fever Swamp.

[01:06:03] Yeah, the Werewolf of Fever Swamp.

[01:06:05] It almost looks a little similar to the Brandon Dormant.

[01:06:08] Yeah, the Brandon Dormant art.

[01:06:09] Yeah, that's what I was saying.

[01:06:11] Yeah.

[01:06:12] I don't know why they would throw that in there.

[01:06:14] You can use the Alderman news.

[01:06:16] And then Stay Out of the Basement.

[01:06:19] Whoa!

[01:06:19] A little bit of...

[01:06:21] So even Jim Thiessen got in on this love letter to Goosebumps art.

[01:06:28] And then the last shot here, I don't know if there's more, but it looks like it ends here

[01:06:33] with the Executioner swinging his axe at the camera.

[01:06:38] Wow.

[01:06:39] Different sequence.

[01:06:40] Like I said, I don't know if this was meant for the beginning of the movie or the ending,

[01:06:45] but it's interesting to see that there were...

[01:06:47] This whole sequence was originally going to be much different.

[01:06:51] And then here, I was able to find some HD unrendered versions of some of those art pieces

[01:06:59] without the credits on them.

[01:07:01] So you can see Ghost Beach, Attack of the Jack-O-Lanterns, Shocker on Shock Street,

[01:07:06] and Scarecrow Walks at Midnight.

[01:07:09] And then we have the background for Revenge of the Law Gnomes and Ghost Beach,

[01:07:13] as well as Deadhouse and Slappy.

[01:07:16] A little unrendered, but they still look pretty cool.

[01:07:20] The Deadhouse one, I think, looks awesome.

[01:07:23] Did you guys see the movie in 3D?

[01:07:25] Because this sequence in 3D was wild, the credits.

[01:07:30] I did not see it in 3D, but I've heard that it was incredible the way that they did this.

[01:07:36] Just that sequence alone, I think, was worth it for the 3D.

[01:07:40] That was really cool.

[01:07:42] Yeah.

[01:07:42] This was like...

[01:07:43] I remember seeing this movie in the theater for the first time,

[01:07:46] and this whole sequence at the end, I was just glued to my seat.

[01:07:50] I was like, that's cool.

[01:07:54] Man.

[01:07:55] It was awesome.

[01:07:56] It was amazing.

[01:07:57] And to cap off sort of the behind-the-scenes pictures,

[01:08:01] we have these two out-of-context behind-the-scenes shots.

[01:08:04] Left here is the actress for The Haunted Mask in front of a giant green screen.

[01:08:12] And then we have Slappy here on the right, just chilling in the auditorium.

[01:08:17] Which brings me to another.

[01:08:19] There is a missing piece of that scene that's not in the movie that we shot

[01:08:24] that I have in my script here.

[01:08:26] There's more dialogue between Stein and Slappy in the theater there.

[01:08:36] Now in the movie, he appears, I think, twice, and then he's on the stage.

[01:08:40] We originally shot, he had three different spots in the theater,

[01:08:43] and then he appears on the stage and does his final thing.

[01:08:48] Let's see.

[01:08:53] All the monsters has converged.

[01:08:55] The vicious vampire bats, the praying mantis, the haunted mask.

[01:08:59] We hear a voice in the dark auditorium.

[01:09:01] Forgetting somebody?

[01:09:03] Stein looks up.

[01:09:04] We can't see him, but we can recognize that voice anywhere.

[01:09:06] Slappy?

[01:09:07] Giggles echo through the auditorium.

[01:09:10] A spotlight pops on, revealing Slappy in a seat two-thirds of the way back towards the back of the auditorium.

[01:09:19] How did you find me?

[01:09:20] Because I know you.

[01:09:21] I created you.

[01:09:22] Or is it the other way around?

[01:09:24] I always forget.

[01:09:25] We're so similar.

[01:09:26] The spot vanishes and Slappy disappears.

[01:09:29] Stein scans the room.

[01:09:31] Slappy, where are you?

[01:09:32] The spot returns on Slappy, who's closer now, sitting in the fifth row, legs crossed.

[01:09:37] I've decided to give you a choice.

[01:09:39] Work with me and you can live.

[01:09:41] Work against me and you can...

[01:09:43] Well, you'll miss all the fun.

[01:09:45] No, Slappy, I don't want that.

[01:09:48] Oh, sure, I've heard that before.

[01:09:49] I'm done, he says.

[01:09:51] I'll never write again, he says.

[01:09:53] But you always come back to me because you need me.

[01:09:57] Because you are me.

[01:09:59] We are not the same person, they say at the same time.

[01:10:04] See, I know your every thought, your deepest, darkest fantasies.

[01:10:09] You made me this way.

[01:10:11] We share everything.

[01:10:13] No, things have changed.

[01:10:15] And that makes Slappy unhappy.

[01:10:18] The lights flash off.

[01:10:20] Slappy disappears once more.

[01:10:21] Slappy?

[01:10:22] Slappy?

[01:10:22] We hear giggling.

[01:10:24] Stein stands the auditorium.

[01:10:26] Hi!

[01:10:27] Stein startles as the spot is directly on his desk, revealing Slappy standing, holding the pages.

[01:10:33] Everyone in the high school joined forces to defeat Slappy and his monsters.

[01:10:37] But Slappy had other ideas.

[01:10:39] So there's a piece that somewhere out there, we filmed it.

[01:10:44] That is really cool.

[01:10:46] I love that he had a whole dialogue like that.

[01:10:48] It brings back to mind that how you said it was Shakespearean almost.

[01:10:53] Oh, yeah.

[01:10:53] It sounds a lot like that.

[01:10:56] 100%.

[01:10:56] Wow.

[01:10:57] Before I move on from this picture, though, I just want to say, this looks like one of those memes where it's like...

[01:11:05] One that comes to mind is like me seeing the Goosebumps movie for the 105th time.

[01:11:11] Oh, because you're...

[01:11:12] Yeah.

[01:11:16] Were you going to say something, Nick?

[01:11:17] I'm sorry.

[01:11:20] No.

[01:11:21] I already said it.

[01:11:22] Oh, okay.

[01:11:24] All right.

[01:11:25] So before we get into some of the awesome promotion and behind-the-scenes videos, I want to just bring attention to this cover of USA Today.

[01:11:34] This was how I found out about the movie back in 2014.

[01:11:38] San Diego Comic-Con was going on at the time.

[01:11:41] And this was the first time I saw anything from this movie.

[01:11:45] Before then, it was just talk.

[01:11:47] No behind-the-scenes previews, no nothing.

[01:11:49] So you got to see Slappy, some of the monsters, and then you got to see the main cast, Jack Black, Dylan Minnette, A Day of Rush, and Ryan Lee.

[01:11:58] And it was just...

[01:12:00] I was stunned.

[01:12:02] And I was like, oh my gosh, we're finally getting it.

[01:12:04] Like, it's on the way.

[01:12:06] And then you got to see the pictures of San Diego outside of Comic-Con.

[01:12:12] These awesome posters that were gracing all the buildings and the windows and the subway station.

[01:12:18] And it was...

[01:12:20] That's when I realized it was a big deal, I think.

[01:12:23] Because I'd been swept up in this world.

[01:12:25] And I just...

[01:12:26] I didn't know how movies worked at the time.

[01:12:28] So everything's like this, right?

[01:12:30] So they flew us out right after we were done to Comic-Con.

[01:12:33] And like the night before that panel, these pictures started showing up.

[01:12:38] And people were like, is that Slappy?

[01:12:39] Maybe?

[01:12:40] So that was one of the...

[01:12:42] That was, I think, one of the really big moments for me where I was like, oh, it is...

[01:12:48] It's out in the world now.

[01:12:51] Yeah.

[01:12:52] And it's going to be a big thing.

[01:12:55] Like, it's one of those eureka moments almost where it's like, oh, we've done something here.

[01:13:01] You know what I mean?

[01:13:01] And that was my hotel.

[01:13:03] I stayed in that hotel when we did Comic-Con, too.

[01:13:06] So I was in the Slappy building there when we were...

[01:13:10] Slappy was watching.

[01:13:11] Yes.

[01:13:11] Was watching over the whole time.

[01:13:14] Well, now we're going to take a look at some videos.

[01:13:16] Starting off, we have the original Sizzle trailer that played at the Comic-Con panel.

[01:13:22] This was the first preview.

[01:13:24] And for a while, actually, this was untraceable.

[01:13:27] I actually...

[01:13:28] I was actually the one who uncovered it and uploaded it here to YouTube.

[01:13:32] So this was the first look in the form of a trailer that people got back at San Diego in 2014.

[01:13:39] It's an unedited one.

[01:13:40] Three, two, one, go!

[01:13:42] And action!

[01:13:44] V, Mark.

[01:13:47] Look, a yard.

[01:13:49] We'd never get this in New York.

[01:13:50] Mom, you don't have to keep selling me on this place.

[01:13:52] I'm staying because I love you.

[01:13:53] Oh, I love you, too.

[01:13:55] And I looked into it legally.

[01:13:57] I can't live on my own until I'm 18.

[01:14:01] So you're the new neighbor?

[01:14:02] Nice to meet you.

[01:14:03] I'm Zach, by the way.

[01:14:04] I'm Hannah.

[01:14:05] Hannah, get away from what we do now.

[01:14:07] I gotta go.

[01:14:09] Good talk.

[01:14:11] Well, just met our neighbor.

[01:14:12] Yeah, they moved to town a few years ago.

[01:14:14] Very mysterious.

[01:14:28] Hey, over here.

[01:14:30] Where are the girls?

[01:14:31] Uh, yeah, about that.

[01:14:32] I just said that to get you over here.

[01:14:33] I need your help.

[01:14:34] So there are no girls?

[01:14:36] Well, there is one girl.

[01:14:37] Oh, my...

[01:14:39] But she's locked in this house, and her dad's a psychopath.

[01:14:42] Does she have a friend?

[01:14:45] Okay, just so we're clear.

[01:14:46] Okay, if I sense any danger, I will run the other way.

[01:14:50] Like, that's gonna work.

[01:14:52] Whoa, where'd you learn that?

[01:14:54] New York?

[01:14:55] No, YouTube.

[01:14:58] You can even hear there's, like, some unused lines here and there.

[01:15:05] Oh, I got that in the trailer.

[01:15:10] Whoa, check this out.

[01:15:12] These are all Goosebumps manuscripts.

[01:15:14] What's he doing with a bunch of kids' books?

[01:15:16] These are kids' books.

[01:15:17] Okay, kids' books help you fall asleep.

[01:15:19] These books keep you up all night.

[01:15:20] I love that line.

[01:15:22] Now, this was a motif I wish was in the rest of the marketing.

[01:15:26] Oh, wow.

[01:15:27] Libraries of books.

[01:15:29] All the monsters I've ever created.

[01:15:31] Oh, go eat worms, man.

[01:15:32] I've never seen this.

[01:15:34] But when they open...

[01:15:36] Monster blood, why I'm afraid of bees.

[01:15:39] Why I hate bees.

[01:15:41] That will happen.

[01:15:42] Oh, wow.

[01:15:44] Now, this was early, so the CGI wasn't 100% yet.

[01:15:48] The movie had wrapped the day before, so there wasn't a whole lot done on any of it.

[01:15:54] Yeah.

[01:15:54] Two days before.

[01:16:07] Snowman Pasadena.

[01:16:08] It's no joke, man.

[01:16:14] Get away from it.

[01:16:15] Get away from it.

[01:16:21] Let's see him get through that.

[01:16:25] What is this place?

[01:16:27] Not friendly.

[01:16:49] Somebody left their binge for like this dummy.

[01:16:51] Who you calling dummy?

[01:16:53] Dummy.

[01:16:54] It's talking.

[01:16:56] The only way to stop them is to suck them back into the book.

[01:17:05] The real page-turner.

[01:17:10] It's Slappy's revenge.

[01:17:11] Why couldn't you read stories about rainbows and unicorns?

[01:17:15] Because that doesn't sell 400 million copies.

[01:17:18] Whoa.

[01:17:19] It's a different, like...

[01:17:20] No, worldwide.

[01:17:21] It's a different shot.

[01:17:22] It's a different take, yeah.

[01:17:25] I love that animation of the book opening with the title coming out.

[01:17:29] Thrilling.

[01:17:30] Yeah.

[01:17:31] Funny.

[01:17:32] Epic.

[01:17:34] Guys, guys!

[01:17:35] I'm trying to shoot a promo here.

[01:17:36] Go back to your graves.

[01:17:38] Or I'll throw you back.

[01:17:39] That's where that image came from.

[01:17:40] Oh my god.

[01:17:41] You want that?

[01:17:42] No?

[01:17:42] Don't miss me.

[01:17:46] So that was the first look at San Diego.

[01:17:50] So...

[01:17:51] I would have been just like...

[01:17:53] Literally...

[01:17:53] I don't even know what.

[01:17:54] Like, if I was in that audience with the...

[01:17:56] Like, watching that with everyone...

[01:17:58] Like, I would have been in tears, man.

[01:18:00] Well, there was one other thing that happened at that panel.

[01:18:02] Oh, that was of note.

[01:18:04] Oh, yes.

[01:18:07] Oh my gosh.

[01:18:08] Of course.

[01:18:10] It's very expensive.

[01:18:11] It actually costs like thousands of dollars.

[01:18:15] 50,000.

[01:18:16] 50,000.

[01:18:21] How's it going, Slappy?

[01:18:23] How are you enjoying Comic-Con this year?

[01:18:25] I love Comic-Con.

[01:18:27] It's great to be in a room full of people freakier than I am.

[01:18:34] So, uh...

[01:18:35] Slappy, uh...

[01:18:37] Are there any, uh...

[01:18:38] Monsters or superheroes that you're looking forward to meeting in particular this year?

[01:18:43] I can't wait to meet Batman.

[01:18:46] Because he reminds me of myself.

[01:18:51] Really?

[01:18:53] That's me.

[01:18:53] I was going to say Batman.

[01:18:55] It's almost as if you're reading my mind.

[01:19:00] Sloppy.

[01:19:02] Sloppy.

[01:19:04] I'm in control of you!

[01:19:09] Who's pulling the strings now, Jack?

[01:19:12] No, Sloppy!

[01:19:13] I created you!

[01:19:15] I can out-create you!

[01:19:17] You didn't create me!

[01:19:19] R.L. Stine created me!

[01:19:21] You're Jack Black!

[01:19:23] You're the Kung Fu Panda guy!

[01:19:25] Oh!

[01:19:27] I don't think so!

[01:19:33] You get-

[01:19:39] You get-

[01:19:40] Who you calling dummy?

[01:19:42] Dummy!

[01:19:48] Dummy!

[01:19:49] I think it's time...

[01:19:50] I brought some of my friends out to play!

[01:19:53] No!

[01:19:54] You've been a very bad boy!

[01:19:56] No!

[01:19:57] Ladies and gentlemen of Comic Con!

[01:20:00] Jack Black!

[01:20:01] Other guys!

[01:20:13] No!

[01:20:34] Professor Shock!

[01:20:37] Oh, that-

[01:20:51] Yes!

[01:20:51] Drunken head cameo!

[01:20:54] A little bit!

[01:20:59] So cool!

[01:21:03] I would've just died!

[01:21:04] The comic you want is between you and me!

[01:21:11] Then we'll get outside!

[01:21:15] No!

[01:21:16] Executioner!

[01:21:16] Clown?

[01:21:17] Shock?

[01:21:18] Take him away!

[01:21:19] Oh!

[01:21:22] Take him outside!

[01:21:23] Take him to my car!

[01:21:26] I'm out!

[01:22:30] I'm out!

[01:22:31] One of the things that stand out for me is I knew people would be excited that the Haunted

[01:22:35] Mask was there.

[01:22:36] So I said that one with a little more oomph.

[01:22:38] It's been a while since I went that one.

[01:22:40] And then when they're dragging him out, I say take him to my car.

[01:22:43] Because I knew people like you would be watching and go, does that mean that the car's in the movie?

[01:22:49] The car?

[01:22:50] The car?

[01:22:50] Yeah!

[01:22:52] I just love that too, Slappy.

[01:22:54] Like after this whole, he just unleashes all these monsters and drags Jack Black out.

[01:23:00] And he's just sitting there.

[01:23:02] It's just like, so I got a couple projects I want to-

[01:23:06] I didn't know what I was going to say, honestly.

[01:23:09] So that might be a female buddy.

[01:23:11] Yeah.

[01:23:12] That was so good.

[01:23:13] I still have my Goosebumps sequel idea.

[01:23:16] And it's-

[01:23:17] I think I might have-

[01:23:18] I think I mentioned it once on the channel.

[01:23:20] And it's the idea of my sequel is that this time the monsters are not coming out of the books,

[01:23:25] but they're coming out of the original artwork.

[01:23:29] We talked about that one last time.

[01:23:32] The ink starts coming off and then the monsters come out.

[01:23:35] But this time to trap them, Tim has to-

[01:23:38] They have to find Tim Jacobus to like paint each monster onto one big canvas to trap them all.

[01:23:44] And I'm like, that would just take forever though too.

[01:23:48] Like, I don't know, it's different from typing, but yeah, that's my idea.

[01:23:52] And it's in some great art museum somewhere.

[01:23:55] There's this giant room where you can't go in and they keep it sealed and, you know, they have to lock the-

[01:24:01] That would be really cool.

[01:24:02] That would be really cool.

[01:24:04] I would love that.

[01:24:05] Yeah.

[01:24:05] Now-

[01:24:06] He needs time to paint instead of time to write.

[01:24:08] It's like, we need to find somewhere that he could just keep painting like on the go, but it has to be like, you know, oh, that would just be so fun.

[01:24:16] If I can jump backwards that the teaser you showed there was, there was a piece shown before that of R.L. Stine himself introducing the movie and the concept and that Jack would be playing him.

[01:24:29] And I shot some things with Slappy with the actual R.L. Stine for that piece that was shown right before that trailer.

[01:24:41] Wow.

[01:24:42] That's really cool.

[01:24:43] Yeah.

[01:24:43] So that was a, that's your next mission.

[01:24:46] Find that.

[01:24:48] Yeah.

[01:24:48] I got to find it now.

[01:24:49] It's going on the list of things that I need to unsurface now.

[01:24:52] That's really cool.

[01:24:53] I was actually going to ask if you ever met R.L. Stine, but I guess you did.

[01:24:57] Yes.

[01:24:58] That was, we were filming at the school.

[01:25:00] I met him on the stage.

[01:25:02] They hadn't put up the set for the shining yet.

[01:25:05] Uh, but, uh, they were, uh, filming and they said, do you want to go?

[01:25:10] You should go film with Bob.

[01:25:12] And I didn't know who Bob was.

[01:25:15] So I walk in and there he is.

[01:25:18] And so I'm just, it's just, I'm holding Slappy like a child.

[01:25:23] And he walks up and shakes my hand and goes, are you a puppeteer?

[01:25:28] And I'm holding a puppet.

[01:25:30] So I assume so.

[01:25:31] Uh, and so he asked me if I knew, yeah, he asked me if I knew any of the Henson people.

[01:25:36] And I was like, oh, there's some of the people.

[01:25:39] And, uh, he told me about, uh, uh, Eureka's castle, the, uh, Nick Jr.

[01:25:46] Show that he wrote.

[01:25:48] Um, and, and that was pretty much all I talked to him a bit, uh, as Slappy after that, but

[01:25:55] it wasn't anything.

[01:25:57] And then I met him again on the second movie.

[01:25:59] He came by, um, to shoot his little cameo piece for, uh, the very end of the movie.

[01:26:05] He, Slappy was on the couch playing video games.

[01:26:08] It was that Slappy puppet.

[01:26:10] He came in, he came in the back door and sat down on the couch next to him and they took a picture or something.

[01:26:14] And so Slappy, Slappy just looked at him and Slappy looked at him and went, hi dad, or something like that.

[01:26:20] And that was pretty much all on the second movie, but you got to find that too, Isaiah.

[01:26:25] It's really funny.

[01:26:26] The idea of, of Slappy playing, what was it?

[01:26:29] Rocket league in the movie.

[01:26:31] And then RL Steins just on the other couch, just being like, ah, you kids with your widget games.

[01:26:36] Well, he, he, he knocked on the back door of the house before he came in like a true gentleman.

[01:26:43] And then he came in and everybody's like, oh my God.

[01:26:46] Oh my God.

[01:26:47] Oh my God.

[01:26:48] That's awesome.

[01:26:49] Well, that was funny.

[01:26:51] Now it's funny.

[01:26:51] Cause I got to imagine, you know, in that scene now, just RL Stein, just being off camera somewhere.

[01:26:57] That would be really funny.

[01:27:00] After Slappy loses, I get to play next.

[01:27:03] Yeah.

[01:27:05] That'd be awesome.

[01:27:06] I would have loved that.

[01:27:07] He did tell me, he did tell me while they were shooting that piece that, um, for the intros for the 90 series that he shot, that he couldn't do two things at once.

[01:27:17] He had to walk, stop, speak, then do the next step.

[01:27:23] He couldn't walk and talk at the same time.

[01:27:25] He's like, I don't know how the actors do it.

[01:27:28] So when next time you watch those, you'll see that it's very, uh, I don't know if it's edited or if it's just him stopping very abruptly and saying a line.

[01:27:39] Yeah.

[01:27:40] It was always like, he would come from like, when you look at those, he doesn't, he doesn't move.

[01:27:45] Right.

[01:27:46] Like, uh, and most of them, he's just standing there and talking to you.

[01:27:50] The only time I can actually remember him moving was for the haunted mask.

[01:27:54] Like after he like got up from the mass table and went to sit down.

[01:27:59] Yeah.

[01:28:00] Like, yeah.

[01:28:01] I was very few lines and then he stops.

[01:28:03] Yeah.

[01:28:04] But it was like, I think of like night and terror tower where he walks from off screen and he's just like, hello, I'm RL Stein.

[01:28:13] Excuse me, miss. Can I get this gift wrapped?

[01:28:17] It's like, oh, no, go ahead.

[01:28:21] Oh, no.

[01:28:23] Like the scene where he's like got the big, what do they call those things? The big spiky bowl.

[01:28:26] No, it was like a mace almost.

[01:28:29] Yeah.

[01:28:30] Yeah.

[01:28:30] And he's just like, can I get this gift for us?

[01:28:32] I'm like, how are you even going to wrap that?

[01:28:33] Like, well, at the end of the show, it just has a big bow on it.

[01:28:37] Yeah, I didn't know.

[01:28:38] It was wrapped.

[01:28:40] Um, so of course, uh, Jack Black was on the promotion trail for the movie, but so was Slappy.

[01:28:47] And so next we're going to watch this one interview that Jack Black and Slappy did together.

[01:28:55] I voice, uh, uh, one of the characters who happens to be sitting next to me.

[01:29:00] What?

[01:29:00] Uh, nothing.

[01:29:02] Okay.

[01:29:02] Uh, and, uh, also I play the, the role of RL Stein, the author of the Goosebumps novels.

[01:29:09] RL Stein.

[01:29:10] I thought this was Jack Black.

[01:29:11] It is Jack Black.

[01:29:12] I play the role of RL Stein.

[01:29:14] You play RL?

[01:29:14] Oh, it was a movie.

[01:29:15] Gotcha.

[01:29:16] Okay.

[01:29:16] Uh, I mean, he's a great guy here.

[01:29:18] You know, I really look up to him.

[01:29:20] Of course, I look up to everyone because I'm three foot tall.

[01:29:25] We had a pretty, uh, spicy relationship, I guess you could say.

[01:29:30] It was a lot of friction.

[01:29:31] But, uh, at the end of the day, I think it worked well for the movie because, uh, we

[01:29:36] don't really get along in the film either.

[01:29:40] We, uh, kind of are arch enemies.

[01:29:43] I don't like him.

[01:29:44] Yeah.

[01:29:44] I don't like him either.

[01:29:46] But you're kind of like, he's kind of like myself.

[01:29:48] We were like two sides of the same coin.

[01:29:50] The gnome stuck to my face.

[01:29:52] We had to pry it off with-

[01:29:54] It wasn't really funny.

[01:29:55] It was actually quite terrifying.

[01:29:57] But, uh, they had to pry it off my face with a, uh, uh, frying pan.

[01:30:05] Quite painful.

[01:30:07] That's why I learned.

[01:30:08] Yeah.

[01:30:08] Yeah.

[01:30:11] Yeah.

[01:30:12] Yeah.

[01:30:13] Yeah.

[01:30:14] Yeah.

[01:30:14] There's lots of set pieces, great big, uh, parts of the movie that, uh, had tons of,

[01:30:19] like, special effects and are really exciting.

[01:30:22] Like, uh, the abominable snowman.

[01:30:24] Incredible sequence.

[01:30:25] Gets like an applause break every time it finishes.

[01:30:28] Uh, the, uh, supermarket scene with the werewolf is incredible.

[01:30:33] Um, the, uh, praying mantis, giant hundred foot bug that chases after the car.

[01:30:39] Um, anything with me in it.

[01:30:41] Oh yeah.

[01:30:41] Anything with this guy.

[01:30:43] Yes.

[01:30:43] Incredibly entertaining.

[01:30:44] He kind of steals the movie.

[01:30:45] Very charismatic.

[01:30:46] Yeah.

[01:30:47] And he loves himself.

[01:30:48] And also the blob is a fan favorite.

[01:30:54] I was made to play this role.

[01:30:58] That was nice.

[01:31:00] I say that.

[01:31:00] All of the characters in the movie are, uh, struggling with loneliness in one way or another,

[01:31:08] you know, uh, RL Stein has been lonely his whole life.

[01:31:11] He, he had trouble making friends when he was a kid because of his allergies and being bullied

[01:31:16] and, and his daughter O'Dea never leaves the house because I'm so overprotective.

[01:31:21] So she's lonely and wants some friends.

[01:31:23] And Dylan is moving to this new neighborhood and he doesn't know.

[01:31:26] They were trying to keep that.

[01:31:27] She was Hannah kind of under wraps at this point, I think.

[01:31:30] So that's why he's using the, the actor's names.

[01:31:33] Yeah.

[01:31:34] Oh, and people, uh, and so they all come together and they all kind of like fill that void for each other,

[01:31:42] for each other.

[01:31:43] And, um, it's kind of, uh, what the movie's about in the end.

[01:31:48] Yeah.

[01:31:49] And sloppy felt lonely in that book.

[01:31:51] Probably.

[01:31:52] You know, things that are beyond my control, uh, global warming.

[01:32:01] That's the scariest thing in the world.

[01:32:03] The end of the world, I guess, is the answer.

[01:32:07] Termites.

[01:32:08] Termites give me goosebumps.

[01:32:14] I mean, that is true.

[01:32:15] Uh, so I mean, come up with another punchline to that.

[01:32:19] I've, I've, I've, it's been 10 years and I've been trying to come up with another secondary punchline, but that's about all I.

[01:32:27] Come up with woodworms.

[01:32:29] Uh, wood chipping wood chipper.

[01:32:31] Yeah.

[01:32:32] Those are pretty creepy.

[01:32:33] Uh, fireplace.

[01:32:36] You could even just say Mary Ellen.

[01:32:38] Yeah.

[01:32:39] Just say Mary Ellen.

[01:32:40] My ex.

[01:32:41] I mentioned, I mentioned he, at some point in one of those junkets that, uh, he's got a thing going with the haunted mask or something like that.

[01:32:49] And a bunch of fans took off on that.

[01:32:51] So if I dropped the name, Mary Ellen, do you know, the chaos I would have started.

[01:32:55] Probably.

[01:32:55] In the Ghostbusters fandom.

[01:32:57] Yeah.

[01:32:58] Diehard would have been like, whoa.

[01:33:02] I would have probably been like that too.

[01:33:05] Oh my God.

[01:33:06] All right.

[01:33:07] So after the San Diego comic-con, it was around the summer of 2015, the first trailer, uh, dropped for goosebumps.

[01:33:16] Uh, and we're going to watch it alongside slappy.

[01:33:19] Hey there dummies.

[01:33:21] Slappy here.

[01:33:22] Uh, and today I'm going to be doing a little review of this Goosebumps movie trailer.

[01:33:28] Let's see what all the screams were about.

[01:33:30] Shall we?

[01:33:34] Mom, are you positive that there weren't any other reasons to live in my life principles?

[01:33:36] Uh, this might be bad.

[01:33:38] Might be as scary as I am.

[01:33:40] And I looked into-

[01:33:41] This might be bad.

[01:33:42] I can't live on my own until I'm 18.

[01:33:44] I say that at a movie trailer sometimes.

[01:33:47] Yeah.

[01:33:47] I'm Zach by the way.

[01:33:48] I'm Hannah.

[01:33:49] I know that voice.

[01:33:50] I gotta go.

[01:33:52] Papa, why are you hiding in your house?

[01:33:54] What are you afraid of?

[01:33:57] You're on your side of it.

[01:33:59] He's a big teddy bear.

[01:34:00] I also recorded this watching a different cut of the trailer, so some of the timing's

[01:34:04] a little off at some certain points.

[01:34:07] Oh, nice and green.

[01:34:08] I'm in trouble.

[01:34:08] Oh, who's Hannah?

[01:34:10] She's locked in this house and her dad's a psychopath.

[01:34:12] Oh!

[01:34:13] Does she have a friend?

[01:34:16] Don't go into the basement!

[01:34:20] The abominable snowman of Pasadena?

[01:34:22] These are all Goosebumps manuscripts.

[01:34:23] Why are these books locked?

[01:34:25] I knew I liked that guy.

[01:34:27] Did you unlock a book?

[01:34:28] Oh no, I'm sorry.

[01:34:29] I'll put it back where it belongs.

[01:34:30] Look, here it is.

[01:34:30] No, don't open it!

[01:34:32] Now you've done it!

[01:34:39] This just makes me want a mystery science theater with Slappy.

[01:34:46] Watching the 90s series?

[01:34:47] Yeah.

[01:34:48] Yeah.

[01:34:49] That'd be fun.

[01:34:50] That'd be amazing.

[01:34:52] Slappy reacts.

[01:34:54] What a crowd.

[01:34:57] That's the only way to suck them is to suck them back into the books.

[01:35:04] What?

[01:35:04] Back in the books?

[01:35:06] She's the villain here.

[01:35:10] Back in the books?

[01:35:12] Oh my God, how'd you do that?

[01:35:14] So we're feelings.

[01:35:15] I have a ton of cavities.

[01:35:16] When I was 10, I didn't brush my teeth for a whole year.

[01:35:18] Oh gross.

[01:35:20] Dental hygiene is very important.

[01:35:22] Everyone, find anything you can to barricade the doors.

[01:35:23] We cannot let the monsters inside.

[01:35:25] I just wanna break them!

[01:35:27] I saw me.

[01:35:28] That was it?

[01:35:34] Nice!

[01:35:35] What are you doing?

[01:35:36] Get me out!

[01:35:36] Oh no no no no!

[01:35:37] Keep going!

[01:35:38] I'm a slappy too.

[01:35:40] Here you go.

[01:35:48] They're the best little friends a creature could ask for.

[01:35:52] They're friendly.

[01:35:54] See what I mean?

[01:35:55] One friend.

[01:36:00] Surprisingly not as awful as I'd expected.

[01:36:03] But I have a bone to pick with whoever put this thing together.

[01:36:07] Why was it they're more slappy in there?

[01:36:09] Someone get my agent on the phone!

[01:36:16] I just love slappy acting like a little child just being like, I saw me.

[01:36:23] That was the reaction on Twitter though, the day that the trailer dropped.

[01:36:28] They were just like, that's all of slappy?

[01:36:31] My family was like, that's all you're in the movie?

[01:36:35] And I was like, no, there's more.

[01:36:38] I brought.

[01:36:38] And so that was sort of my way to poke back at that.

[01:36:42] I do remember when, because the first time I saw the trailer was actually by accident.

[01:36:49] We were seeing, I think the Minions movie and the trailer played before it.

[01:36:54] And I didn't know there was a trailer out yet.

[01:36:56] So I recognized it like really quickly.

[01:36:59] In fact, it was actually the moment I saw Dylan Minnette.

[01:37:01] Cause I'm like, wait, that's the guy I saw in the promos.

[01:37:04] Like this must be goosebumps.

[01:37:05] But my family didn't catch on until slappy appeared.

[01:37:08] And I will never forget.

[01:37:10] I looked over and all of them just were like, they're like, Oh, slap this up.

[01:37:17] That's slappy.

[01:37:17] Must be a goosebumps movie.

[01:37:20] Are you sure they didn't just shake their heads?

[01:37:21] Cause that's what I got.

[01:37:22] I was watching Star Wars force awakens and like, literally I'm sitting there and as soon

[01:37:28] as like the goosebumps trailer come on, they'll just looked at me and just went.

[01:37:34] Like, oh, he's going to be excited now.

[01:37:36] He's going to be excited.

[01:37:38] Yeah.

[01:37:39] Here's one of those junkets.

[01:37:41] If I could jump back to that as well.

[01:37:42] And I've not seen it again.

[01:37:44] So I'm putting you on another, another mission to find this one.

[01:37:47] They asked, uh, what, uh, I forget who it was for.

[01:37:51] We did.

[01:37:52] That was an entire day.

[01:37:53] That was like eight hours of just every five minutes, a different reporter or someone would

[01:37:58] come in and interview us.

[01:37:59] So we did those back to back to back.

[01:38:01] Uh, but one of them was, they asked what, um, slappy's favorite scary movie was.

[01:38:09] And I said, grease two.

[01:38:13] So I don't know where that ended up.

[01:38:19] I have to find it now.

[01:38:20] I feel like I've seen those before, but I'll have to look for them.

[01:38:24] I'll have to look for both of those.

[01:38:26] Oh, here we have a very short behind the scenes featurette.

[01:38:30] Uh, this was one of the little promos that would play, uh, in up to the premiere of the

[01:38:36] movie.

[01:38:37] It's me.

[01:38:38] I remember this black on the set of goosebumps.

[01:38:40] I'm playing RL Stein.

[01:38:42] I have to whisper because I'd have to get to the theater before the trailer started

[01:38:45] to see something like this.

[01:38:47] Got a tremendous cast.

[01:38:48] Yeah.

[01:38:49] Crew.

[01:38:50] Think it's going to be a good one.

[01:38:55] If I'm not mistaken, there's a much longer version of this, uh, out there on the internet.

[01:39:00] I believe so too.

[01:39:01] I can remind people of it and also introduce people to it with the movie.

[01:39:06] I'm all in scaredy-cat.

[01:39:07] Yep.

[01:39:08] The experience has been incredible.

[01:39:10] It's exciting to cater to such a huge audience.

[01:39:13] These are all goosebumps manuscripts.

[01:39:15] Why are these books locked?

[01:39:17] What we wanted to do with the film was to take what was essential about goosebumps and

[01:39:24] then make that bigger.

[01:39:25] The first name.

[01:39:26] Executive producer on the TV, though, also.

[01:39:29] Action set piece.

[01:39:30] Everything in goosebumps.

[01:39:31] Combined into a movie for everyone.

[01:39:33] It's a very high level group of people with incredible talent.

[01:39:36] That makes them.

[01:39:36] Taking a picture on the podcast.

[01:39:38] I'm just so thrilled.

[01:39:39] Taking a picture with Slappy was always her first priority.

[01:39:42] When she saw me, she goes, I have pictures with all of them.

[01:39:45] I need to make sure I get my picture with it.

[01:39:49] Many generations.

[01:39:54] It's going to be a very entertaining movie that I don't think will ever get old.

[01:39:58] Everyone loves goosebumps.

[01:40:05] This seems like a fun time working on that movie.

[01:40:08] Every time you see like a behind the scenes, it just looks like it was a blast.

[01:40:13] We're going to back and relive that.

[01:40:14] The the the the libraries there is is built on a soundstage and it's not an actual in the

[01:40:22] actual house.

[01:40:22] So when we're inside Stein's house downstairs and all of that is real.

[01:40:27] And as soon as they go upstairs to the library, that is a set.

[01:40:33] So that's just where you hung out was in Stein's study because they only used it just a little bit.

[01:40:39] But they didn't they didn't want to tear it down yet just in case they needed it for anything.

[01:40:43] So that's just that's just where you hung out on the between between shots and things.

[01:40:48] So hanging out that room in particular is one of those places you just sit around and joke.

[01:40:55] And we me and the guys that I was hanging out with, we did prank calls and all sorts of stuff out of Stein's study.

[01:41:03] So, oh, Frank calls a slappy.

[01:41:05] I hope that's what I was doing.

[01:41:07] Frank calls a slappy.

[01:41:10] Oh, that'd be awesome.

[01:41:11] It'd be something he would do.

[01:41:13] Yes.

[01:41:14] Next up, we have probably the best thing to come out of the Goosebumps movie marketing.

[01:41:20] A music video.

[01:41:24] You saved the best for the lost of you.

[01:41:26] How could we not?

[01:41:27] I want somebody to edit this into the end credits, you know, like the Adam's family rap kind of deal.

[01:41:35] Yeah.

[01:41:37] I would have killed for this to be the end credits.

[01:41:40] Would have been awesome.

[01:41:42] I remember this music video coming out and I remember I listened to this when we were on our way to the movie theater to see this on opening night.

[01:41:52] So yeah.

[01:41:56] Jack is just jamming it up.

[01:42:01] Goosebumps are a coming.

[01:42:03] And they brought monster blood, y'all.

[01:42:05] So you best say cheese and die.

[01:42:07] Or all of the Greeks will call.

[01:42:09] When young Zack Cooper moved out, my man are else all trouble.

[01:42:14] And now that he's unlocked the book, this whole place will be rubble.

[01:42:18] So when the shocker hits Shock Street, better know that you dead me.

[01:42:22] And you can't hide underneath your red sheet as here comes a Goosebumps beat.

[01:42:26] Ha ha ha.

[01:42:27] The monster's gonna go see ya.

[01:42:28] The monster's gonna go see ya.

[01:42:29] The monster's gonna go see ya.

[01:42:36] The monster's gonna go see ya.

[01:42:37] The monster's gonna go see ya.

[01:42:38] The monster's gonna go see ya.

[01:42:38] It makes sense that Jack Black would do a music video.

[01:42:42] Partisanatiousness.

[01:42:43] He can't control them anyway.

[01:42:44] Partisanatiousness.

[01:42:45] I'm surprised there wasn't a Goosebumps song.

[01:42:49] It's clear these evil monster dudes.

[01:42:51] Got planes that rain from coast to coast.

[01:42:53] Can't hide from the storm in the Pasadena.

[01:42:55] Can't run from the world with a fever swan.

[01:43:01] So don't cry monster, don't say cheese, you travel what you wish for.

[01:43:06] All these freaky ghouls will send you on your Harriest Adventure.

[01:43:11] Harriest Adventure!

[01:43:12] Harry and Larry got a shout out.

[01:43:16] Ha ha, you're slappy.

[01:43:22] Ooh the Goosebumps!

[01:43:23] This is like one of those 90s, 20 music videos.

[01:43:56] I'm in for a scare!

[01:43:59] Is that a numbered version?

[01:44:00] I can't tell.

[01:44:02] I don't know.

[01:44:03] We gotta see.

[01:44:05] That was a wild day.

[01:44:07] That was at YouTube Space in LA.

[01:44:12] They had two videos that I was part of,

[01:44:15] and I think there was a few more that Jack was a part of.

[01:44:19] With Vsauce, I also did a video with them.

[01:44:23] That's a, it's like a 15, 60 minute video.

[01:44:25] It's a long one, but the, the, that one was a lot of fun.

[01:44:30] But we recorded that to whoever wrote the song just did a demo.

[01:44:34] And so all of Jack's shenanigans there are just to the demo.

[01:44:39] And then as soon as they had shot the video, we went in and recorded the actual vocals for it.

[01:44:46] While they were shooting all the dancing with the, with the girls.

[01:44:50] But that was one of the times that Jack was, was especially kind to me because I was there and the director, whoever was doing the recording, walked over and said, which of you is doing slappy for this?

[01:45:02] And he pointed to me.

[01:45:03] So I got to be included in the thing.

[01:45:06] He could have just taken it on himself.

[01:45:07] So that's one of those moments where I was like, thank you, sir.

[01:45:12] Thank you.

[01:45:13] Yeah.

[01:45:15] It's a really fun.

[01:45:17] I mean, I just love how fun the Goosebumps promotion was like, this is one of the things you had mentioned that, you know, Jack did a bunch of other YouTube videos.

[01:45:26] Um, and, uh, so, so did you as slappy.

[01:45:30] I remember there was one, I don't remember the creator.

[01:45:32] Um, but I remember it was titled meeting the scariest dummy in my life.

[01:45:37] Oh yeah.

[01:45:37] Yeah.

[01:45:38] Really funny.

[01:45:40] Um, and then I think Jack was also, uh, playing five nights at Freddy's with Markiplier.

[01:45:46] Yes.

[01:45:47] Yes.

[01:45:48] Like it was all supposed to do.

[01:45:50] We were supposed to do quite a bit of collaborating with Markiplier.

[01:45:54] Um, he, there was something happening in his personal life or something.

[01:45:57] He had to step away from YouTube for a month or so.

[01:46:01] So all that stuff didn't work out, but I was a huge Markiplier fan.

[01:46:05] So I was super excited for that, but I think it just ended up being that one video of him and, uh, and Jack's son, uh, playing the game.

[01:46:15] Mm.

[01:46:15] Mm.

[01:46:16] Yeah.

[01:46:16] It was pretty interesting when I, I, cause I was, you know, I, and subbed the Markiplier and I remember when I saw that, I was like Markiplier is doing a goosebumps video.

[01:46:24] Really?

[01:46:24] That's cool.

[01:46:26] Um, and then if that's a, if that's a weird version of Jack black in that video too, he's, he's in the sweat.

[01:46:31] He's got like, just the whole, like sort of like sweater sweatshirt and pants.

[01:46:36] It's all white.

[01:46:37] And it was like, I think his hair was slicked back too.

[01:46:39] He's doing a Jack Nicholson for some.

[01:46:42] Yeah.

[01:46:44] So good.

[01:46:45] But, uh, but no, this music video was awesome.

[01:46:49] And it's just so cool that like slappy gets his own rap number in the middle.

[01:46:55] Like that is, I remember, I remember getting the email for that one and being like, okay, totally get it, but I'll show up.

[01:47:05] You're going to make me do what?

[01:47:09] Oh man.

[01:47:10] Next up we have, uh, well, you guys were talking about the goosebumps VR experience earlier.

[01:47:17] Why don't we take a look at that?

[01:47:25] So you're in a chair that moves with all of these movements.

[01:47:28] You've got noise canceling headphones and you're in the headset.

[01:47:34] Is there something behind us?

[01:47:35] Good.

[01:47:38] What is that?

[01:47:43] Something in the mist.

[01:47:47] I don't remember writing about it.

[01:47:49] The praying mantis would be fit for the mist.

[01:47:51] I would think.

[01:47:53] Yeah.

[01:47:53] It reminded me of the mist like straight away.

[01:47:56] Yeah, exactly.

[01:48:03] And we won't have time to watch it here today, but there actually is a full making of video of this VR experience.

[01:48:11] They go into detail about how this was all done.

[01:48:14] The camera setup was fascinating.

[01:48:17] That was very interesting to watch.

[01:48:20] Mm-hmm.

[01:48:23] Mm-hmm.

[01:48:23] Because we did this, or they did this over like one of our lunch breaks or something.

[01:48:26] It was not, they didn't have a whole lot of time for Jack.

[01:48:31] Yeah.

[01:48:31] They had all the stuff set up prior.

[01:48:34] Look out the back.

[01:48:34] Is it still behind us?

[01:48:36] Hang on, I'm gonna try it.

[01:48:42] We did it.

[01:48:43] It's gone.

[01:48:45] We're safe.

[01:48:46] Oh no, we're not.

[01:48:47] I'm going over there!

[01:48:50] Ah!

[01:48:50] Ah!

[01:48:53] My wagoneer!

[01:48:55] I know my wagoneer.

[01:48:57] I had such a little mileage on it.

[01:48:58] I know my wagoneer.

[01:48:58] It's over, can't you tell?

[01:49:00] No, no twosies.

[01:49:01] You don't stay on for a free ride.

[01:49:03] No, that's it.

[01:49:04] Go, go.

[01:49:05] Back to the end of the line if you want another book.

[01:49:06] Go!

[01:49:09] So that was at the premiere, right?

[01:49:11] That's what you had said it was at?

[01:49:13] I know, I know.

[01:49:14] I got to try it out at the premiere.

[01:49:16] And I think it was in certain movie theaters in the LA area, because there was a secondary screen somewhere that I filmed like the step right up and try out the crazy VR goosebumps things.

[01:49:31] I remember doing that at some point while I was at Sony, but I think it might have been certain theaters were getting the seats that moved and vibrated in the auditorium.

[01:49:44] So I think it was just the first three or four theaters in LA that had that, if I'm not mistaken.

[01:49:49] It was a very exclusive experience then.

[01:49:52] So anybody who got to do that...

[01:49:54] I'm happy it's online, because if it wasn't online, like where's the proof of it at all?

[01:49:59] Exactly.

[01:50:01] No, I'll, and what I'll do is I'll link in the description below one of the VR versions if you guys want to try it out, because it is available on YouTube.

[01:50:09] Definitely give it a try.

[01:50:10] It's a ton of fun.

[01:50:13] Next up, we are going to take a look at the one of the many networks on TV that did sort of like a behind the scenes look.

[01:50:21] In this case, it wasn't behind the scenes.

[01:50:23] They were doing a screening in LA, I believe, and ABC Family got some of their cast members to be a part of it.

[01:50:32] I've never been able to find this.

[01:50:35] This was another one that eluded my grasp for a while, but I finally found it.

[01:50:40] We're so excited you guys could be here tonight.

[01:50:41] We've got some surprises in store.

[01:50:44] Alright guys, let's go in.

[01:50:46] Oh my god.

[01:51:02] You've just released every monster I've ever created.

[01:51:04] She jumped a lot.

[01:51:09] You guys are hilarious.

[01:51:11] We're the only ones who can do this.

[01:51:13] How'd she do that?

[01:51:14] I have a ton of cavities.

[01:51:16] When I was 10, I didn't brush my teeth for a whole year.

[01:51:20] The poodle is deceiving because you think it's so cute.

[01:51:22] I loved it.

[01:51:24] Goosebumps.

[01:51:25] Rated PG.

[01:51:26] Now in theaters.

[01:51:27] Your acting feels a little stiff.

[01:51:32] Never seen that.

[01:51:33] That's awesome.

[01:51:34] He's like, never heard that one before.

[01:51:37] They flew me out specifically for that for just that one day for that thing.

[01:51:43] And I didn't know who the people were.

[01:51:46] I was like, if somebody stupid famous walks through here and I'm behind this desk and I miss it.

[01:51:53] I'm going to be very angry.

[01:51:55] I'm going to be mad.

[01:51:56] Yeah.

[01:51:57] Slappy won't be happy.

[01:51:59] I mean, Slappy would have got to see them.

[01:52:02] You got to participate in the premiere though.

[01:52:05] Not the screening that was going on there, right?

[01:52:08] I was in that haunted house maze there that whole time.

[01:52:12] So I didn't, to my knowledge, that was where I was.

[01:52:18] I was behind a desk.

[01:52:19] I was operating Slappy like with the wrong hand and backwards.

[01:52:22] It was very uncomfortable.

[01:52:24] That I do remember.

[01:52:25] But yeah, I don't think I saw the movie for another few weeks after that.

[01:52:31] Yeah.

[01:52:31] Oh, that's a shame.

[01:52:33] That would have been cool though.

[01:52:34] Just get to go out there with Slappy and just be like, hey, what's up?

[01:52:40] All right.

[01:52:41] Next up, we're going to take a quick look at the blooper reel for this movie.

[01:52:46] Lots of fun times.

[01:52:48] Goosebumps.

[01:53:13] I love that.

[01:53:14] It's like he's mocking them.

[01:53:15] Just like, oh yeah, I'll never get out of there.

[01:53:22] It doesn't work unless it's a real goose bumps story with, you know, bumps and bruises and tips and tops and turvies and snips and snaps and bips and bops and tips and tops and flips and flops and furies.

[01:53:37] Flurries and blubbies.

[01:53:41] I'm sure that was just some debris that we couldn't see.

[01:53:44] No, it was definitely the kid.

[01:53:47] What do you mean it was definitely the kid?

[01:53:48] Realize definitely not the kid.

[01:53:50] You definitely killed the kid.

[01:53:52] You said there was going to be girls.

[01:53:53] Not only the no girls, but there's an equipment manager.

[01:53:56] Sorry.

[01:53:57] You stop talking to my daughter or I'll lock you in the lung- in the lungs.

[01:54:01] I'll lock you in the lungs, the iron lungs.

[01:54:03] And no one escapes the iron lung.

[01:54:08] He could nerf it.

[01:54:13] Fire!

[01:54:14] I can't get ahold of your mother or the cops or anyone.

[01:54:19] I told you to stay away from us or something bad would happen.

[01:54:22] But you had to go off like Benedict Cumberbatch in the BBC series of Sherlock Holmes.

[01:54:26] He's swinging around where you don't belong!

[01:54:41] Where's the typewriter?

[01:54:43] Don't worry.

[01:54:45] It's in a safe place.

[01:54:54] Transportation!

[01:54:55] I can't type of one walking?

[01:54:56] Then take this down.

[01:54:57] In your brain, in your mental note place, in your brain!

[01:55:01] Think!

[01:55:03] What is that?

[01:55:52] That's from the bicyclist scene that I talked about earlier.

[01:55:58] I was going to say, it looks like-

[01:56:00] It looked like it because he's looking out of the car while he's looking at you.

[01:56:05] So it's like-

[01:56:06] He stops and says, I cut you off.

[01:56:08] And he throws another book off, throws a match out and speeds away.

[01:56:11] Which is a shot-

[01:56:12] We still see the shot of the match in the book going out.

[01:56:15] But the whole cyclist is cut.

[01:56:18] Yeah. Okay.

[01:56:18] It's like the only-

[01:56:20] It's funny because we talked about that and then we found like probably the only remnant of that scene.

[01:56:25] Yeah.

[01:56:26] Funny enough.

[01:56:27] Next up came the premiere at the Westwood Village Theater on October 4th, 2015 in LA.

[01:56:35] This was the first widescreen premiere for the Goosebumps movie.

[01:56:40] Old big party.

[01:56:43] Is that, uh, something you can-

[01:56:45] Oh, you mean you lost your feed?

[01:56:47] Yeah, I lost feed to my monitor here.

[01:56:49] Okay.

[01:56:50] Oh, I've never heard the-

[01:56:53] It was like, I- what was that? I lost feed to my-

[01:56:55] I lost feed to my monitor.

[01:56:57] I had a TV and I could see what was going on back there.

[01:57:02] It was just funny to just hear that in a sloppy voice in the background.

[01:57:10] There's the virtual reality.

[01:57:11] I wonder if any of those ones still around, those actual box thing.

[01:57:18] Oh yeah, the goggles had slapped his eyes on him.

[01:57:21] Forgot that.

[01:57:22] Oh, you wanna get hot though!

[01:57:55] Yeah, all the YouTube videos cut the word murder out from when I introduced them.

[01:58:00] I remember that being a thing.

[01:58:03] The execution.

[01:58:04] You're gonna enjoy this next game!

[01:58:38] I thought he had a hat for somebody.

[01:58:41] Yeah.

[01:58:42] Maybe he lost it.

[01:58:53] So this structure behind, you had to walk through to get into the theater and they threw some of the monsters in there too.

[01:58:58] So there was a bit of a haunted house once you got past the monsters at the door.

[01:59:04] That's pretty cool.

[01:59:10] And if I'm not mistaken, that was it.

[01:59:12] We've got a bit of weather here today.

[01:59:15] A little cloudy, a little rainy.

[01:59:17] That's not gonna be good for me.

[01:59:19] What do you mean?

[01:59:19] It's perfect weather for the goosebumps to hear.

[01:59:24] I'm dry clean only, Jack.

[01:59:48] I'm dry clean only, Jack.

[01:59:55] Okay, that's enough.

[01:59:55] The compilation was compiled by a user named Slappy Lover on YouTube.

[02:00:00] Okay.

[02:00:01] Of Avery and Slappy Moments.

[02:00:03] Let's take a look.

[02:00:07] This is the Vsauce video.

[02:00:09] Avery?

[02:00:14] Bang!

[02:00:20] Okay, next one.

[02:00:22] Three, two, one, go.

[02:00:25] Oh, he was great.

[02:00:27] We became really close friends.

[02:00:29] I said to him, Jack, I know we're going to be friends forever.

[02:00:33] Exciting things happening here today.

[02:00:43] This is the weirdest thing I've ever done in my life.

[02:00:46] And you're a puppeteer.

[02:00:53] I love that.

[02:00:57] It's lunchtime now.

[02:00:59] Hanging out here in the Sony war room where we've been making Slappy videos all day.

[02:01:03] Hanging out with this jerk again.

[02:01:04] Bunch of different countries, a bunch of different social media platforms.

[02:01:07] Taking over the Snapchat and the Instagram and the stuff.

[02:01:12] They've let me ad-lib, they've let me improv.

[02:01:14] I'm having an awesome time.

[02:01:16] I feel important.

[02:01:17] You've done it!

[02:01:18] You've unleashed all of the goosebumps, Christians.

[02:01:21] I still have that shirt.

[02:01:22] That's a little embarrassing.

[02:01:23] Now, let's see my master plan unfurled!

[02:01:25] In a strange turn of events, Slappy just messaged me on Twitter.

[02:01:30] I've had a weird day, man.

[02:01:32] You've had a weird life.

[02:01:34] I'm not here at Sony.

[02:01:35] I've got about half an hour until I get to do anything, so I'm just chilling with my friend.

[02:01:38] I'm not your friend.

[02:01:39] We're taking a bit of a dinner break now, so...

[02:01:42] I'm waiting on my food to be delivered while I sit here in the empty screening room at Sony.

[02:01:46] Like you do.

[02:01:47] A couple hours later now, and we've been working on Twitter videos.

[02:01:51] Sending out some shout-outs to fans.

[02:01:53] I actually recognized a couple of the names this time.

[02:01:55] We're not done yet.

[02:01:56] We've got a few hours left still, but this is a lot of fun.

[02:01:58] No, it's not.

[02:01:59] I'm not having any fun at all.

[02:02:07] Are we just starting with number one and going through...

[02:02:08] No, we've got to go through them all again.

[02:02:10] Okay, gotcha.

[02:02:11] Gotcha.

[02:02:13] Everything's rolling.

[02:02:14] You're waiting on me now.

[02:02:15] You're ready to get on.

[02:02:16] Alrighty.

[02:02:18] Hey, dummies!

[02:02:19] It's me!

[02:02:20] Slappy!

[02:02:21] All my friends and I are coming to your house!

[02:02:25] Hehehehehehe!

[02:02:26] Goosebumps!

[02:02:27] Get it now on Blu-ray!

[02:02:29] I thought I'd recorded a lot of stuff before.

[02:02:31] That was nothing.

[02:02:32] A lot of stuff for DVD commercials next year.

[02:02:34] A lot of shout-outs.

[02:02:35] Stuff for Nickelodeon.

[02:02:36] That was pretty cool.

[02:02:36] Next right now, but I hear we still have a lot to go.

[02:02:38] My hand's cramping up.

[02:02:39] It's starting to feel like work now.

[02:02:44] Do you have anything you'd like to say to the people watching Clavy?

[02:02:47] Get a life.

[02:02:50] And also see my movie.

[02:02:52] Now I'm on hold in my trailer.

[02:02:54] He's hanging out in my trailer.

[02:02:55] You're hanging out in my trailer!

[02:02:57] Yeah, whatever.

[02:02:57] I'm gonna hang out here.

[02:02:58] Go over my script.

[02:02:59] And we'll be working in just a little bit.

[02:03:00] Down in the haunted car and go, sorry folks!

[02:03:03] I'd slow down, but I can't reach the brakes!

[02:03:06] Comedy genius.

[02:03:07] Plus I don't even know what I would say.

[02:03:08] Thanks for watching, and thanks for all your questions!

[02:03:11] They were a real scream.

[02:03:15] There's a strange box on the table.

[02:03:17] Let's find out what's inside, shall we?

[02:03:20] There's a bunch of little clippy things.

[02:03:22] And it is Slappy.

[02:03:24] How's it going, man?

[02:03:25] I'll just seal that back up before I have to sleep tonight.

[02:03:27] It is a few hours later, and I'm back in the room now.

[02:03:29] I got some dinner, did some rehearsing with Slappy, and lost a couple hours on Tumblr.

[02:03:34] Either way, I've got a few minutes, I can eat lunch, put this guy back together, and then

[02:03:38] I head into Sony.

[02:03:41] I've been to Sony before.

[02:03:47] I think I've told the story before, but I remember I went to Sony Pictures in 2018 to get a tour.

[02:03:53] Oh, and the chair was empty?

[02:03:55] The chair was empty, and they told me it was because Slappy was being used to film the

[02:03:59] sequel.

[02:04:00] And I was both disappointed yet super excited, because that was like, oh man, the sequel's

[02:04:05] coming out!

[02:04:08] When does the movie start?

[02:04:10] Soon.

[02:04:12] Soon.

[02:04:13] How soon?

[02:04:15] Very, very soon.

[02:04:17] Like, soon, soon?

[02:04:19] Yes.

[02:04:19] Any second now.

[02:04:26] I'm still waiting.

[02:04:32] Quick visit to Rotten Tomatoes for Periscope, and now I am on the Sony lot, trying to figure

[02:04:37] out where the heck I am supposed to be.

[02:04:39] Does that app even exist anymore?

[02:04:40] Periscope?

[02:04:41] I don't even know.

[02:04:42] What did Slappy get for Christmas?

[02:04:43] I bet it's a nice new tux.

[02:04:45] Slappy doesn't celebrate Christmas.

[02:04:47] Slappy celebrates his holiday, which lasts from the beginning of December to the end of

[02:04:51] February, where he expects us to bring him a gift every day, which I think is absolutely

[02:04:55] ridiculous.

[02:04:56] So I didn't get him anything for Christmas.

[02:04:57] That's Slappy Miss!

[02:04:58] Slappy Miss, I'm sorry.

[02:05:00] What do you think the boss will do at Chuck E Cheese?

[02:05:02] Slappy, what would you do if we went to Chuck E Cheese?

[02:05:05] We're gonna go to Chuck E Cheese?

[02:05:07] No, not now.

[02:05:07] Just a hypothetical.

[02:05:08] Oh, I'm gonna go start the car!

[02:05:10] Can Slappy feel pain?

[02:05:12] Slappy, can you feel pain?

[02:05:13] No, but you will!

[02:05:16] Slappy finds a Mario hat!

[02:05:18] It's a me, Slappy-o!

[02:05:20] What do you think about all of Slappy's fangirls?

[02:05:23] I never knew that something like Slappy would have fangirls.

[02:05:27] He's not a Justin Bieber or a One Direction.

[02:05:29] You don't know you're beautiful!

[02:05:31] What would it feel like to be trapped in a book?

[02:05:33] Slappy, what's it like to be trapped in a book?

[02:05:36] It's dark!

[02:05:37] It's dark.

[02:05:37] What do the monsters do when they're trapped in their books?

[02:05:39] Slappy, what do you do when you're trapped in their book?

[02:05:42] Well, I plot the ultimate world domination where I will crush all of you!

[02:05:47] Do that.

[02:05:48] Ooh, and Tumblr!

[02:05:50] Ha ha ha!

[02:05:52] Ha ha!

[02:06:14] Ventriloquist who was a-

[02:06:16] Yeah, YouTube took my version of this video down.

[02:06:18] I didn't know it was still out there.

[02:06:21] It's been archived.

[02:06:27] Just like forever!

[02:06:28] Nothing's ever lost on the internet.

[02:06:30] Ooh, the Goosebumps!

[02:06:31] We have a fun new movie coming out, Plug.

[02:06:45] Oh no, no Neil, I did not come here to plug my movie.

[02:06:48] Wait, I'm here because my bro, NPH, said he wanted to get some Jack Blackness all up in his guest announcer booth.

[02:06:55] Ha ha ha ha!

[02:06:57] I love this.

[02:06:58] You're not gonna plug our new movie Goosebumps in theaters this Friday?

[02:07:03] Slappy!

[02:07:04] Ha ha ha ha!

[02:07:06] Ha ha ha ha ha!

[02:07:07] Ha ha ha ha ha!

[02:07:09] Ha ha ha ha ha!

[02:07:11] Ha ha ha ha ha!

[02:07:14] Ha ha ha ha ha!

[02:07:16] Ha ha ha ha ha!

[02:07:18] Ha ha ha ha!

[02:07:18] Ha ha ha ha!

[02:07:18] That's so good.

[02:07:21] Wow, this runs through the whole- the whole thing, doesn't it?

[02:07:25] Ha ha ha!

[02:07:26] It goes into the second one.

[02:07:27] It's like riding a bicycle.

[02:07:28] Welcome to another the next day.

[02:07:34] It is the day of the shoot.

[02:07:35] We're heading out in- what are you doing?

[02:07:37] Look, I've been locked in a suitcase for the last year and a half.

[02:07:40] The least you can let me do is catch up on my soaps.

[02:07:43] Fine.

[02:07:43] Anyway, we're headed out to shoot in the next little bit.

[02:07:45] Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha!

[02:07:45] So I'll talk to you again when something interesting is happening.

[02:07:48] Get me some popcorn!

[02:07:50] We are here in the-

[02:07:51] All right, we'll go ahead and stop it right there because it goes into the making of the

[02:07:55] second film.

[02:07:56] But that was just a testament to how close you and Slappy have become.

[02:08:02] Yes.

[02:08:02] Thank you, Slappy Lover.

[02:08:04] There was a number there.

[02:08:06] Slappy Lover 97, I'm pretty sure.

[02:08:08] I'll leave a link to this compilation in the description below so you guys can check it out.

[02:08:12] But yeah, and of course all these vlogs are available on Avery's channel so you guys can

[02:08:17] go check them out there too.

[02:08:19] Ha ha ha ha ha ha!

[02:08:20] Inside my brain comedy.

[02:08:21] Avery, I've been told that there's one more surprise in store.

[02:08:27] Well, you're going to have to let me leave.

[02:08:30] I'm going to go get it.

[02:08:31] It's actually something I'm very excited about.

[02:08:35] I know all you guys are collectors and things so it's something I've just added to my collection

[02:08:39] that I'd like to show you but I need to step away for a moment so I'm going to turn my video

[02:08:45] off here for just a second because I think it's going to be a big surprise.

[02:08:51] Ha ha ha ha!

[02:08:53] I guess until he gets back, you know, really fun movie and you know, it's crazy to think

[02:09:01] it's been as long as it has been for that movie to come out.

[02:09:07] But you guys have fun.

[02:09:09] It really does feel like, just to remember the announcement like it was yesterday,

[02:09:14] we're getting a Goosebumps movie but now it's been nine years so that's kind of wild.

[02:09:18] No, it's crazy.

[02:09:20] You know, one out, it's crazy to think of a time before the Goosebumps movie because

[02:09:25] it really just kind of set the whole Goosebumps community on fire.

[02:09:29] Oh, Avery, you're back.

[02:09:31] Whoa, wait, what?

[02:09:33] Wait, no.

[02:09:36] Slappy?

[02:09:38] In the flesh.

[02:09:41] Well, hello, Slappy.

[02:09:43] I didn't think that you would be making an appearance here today.

[02:09:47] No, I'm happy to meet with you guys.

[02:09:49] You guys are responsible for the third movie, right?

[02:09:52] Oh, yeah.

[02:09:53] Yeah, we're working on that right now.

[02:09:55] Perfect.

[02:09:56] I've got some ideas and I'm ready to discuss money.

[02:10:00] All right.

[02:10:00] Well, hey, we're glad that you're here.

[02:10:02] But before we get to any of that, you know, we were just here talking about the fact that

[02:10:08] Goosebumps, your movie is nine years old today.

[02:10:11] Can you believe that?

[02:10:13] How serendipitous.

[02:10:14] Ah, my mouth is stuck.

[02:10:16] Hold on.

[02:10:18] Hold on.

[02:10:22] Okay, I'm back.

[02:10:23] Yes.

[02:10:24] How crazy.

[02:10:27] A little malfunction there, but Slappy...

[02:10:29] We're still working some things out.

[02:10:31] Don't worry about it.

[02:10:33] That's all good, Slappy.

[02:10:34] We're very glad to have you here.

[02:10:36] And yeah, it's been nine years since the Goosebumps movie came out.

[02:10:40] Your tour to stardom.

[02:10:42] Yes.

[02:10:43] How does that feel?

[02:10:45] Well, it's been great.

[02:10:46] And in the last year I've been working, even though you haven't seen me working, I've been

[02:10:50] on stage.

[02:10:52] I've done a lot of regional theater in the interim.

[02:10:58] So I'm not done yet.

[02:11:00] But everyone, of course, knows who I am because of my big break, as it were.

[02:11:07] Yeah.

[02:11:07] I mean, that movie was a big success for you.

[02:11:11] And I mean, if you weren't a...

[02:11:12] You were definitely a star beforehand, but it seems like you've become an even bigger star

[02:11:16] in the years past.

[02:11:19] I enjoy talking to you.

[02:11:21] You're very good at this flattery thing.

[02:11:23] Oh, no problem.

[02:11:24] We're Goosebumps fans.

[02:11:25] We love you, Slappy.

[02:11:26] We love you very much.

[02:11:28] Yeah.

[02:11:29] Now, I guess since you're here, you know, all the folks watching and listening to this

[02:11:34] podcast, you know, are curious to know about, you know, what you've been up to and what

[02:11:39] you were doing on the set of this movie.

[02:11:42] So I guess to start off, how did you react when you were approached about a Goosebumps

[02:11:47] movie?

[02:11:48] Because you were doing, you know, you were the star of books and TV shows beforehand,

[02:11:51] but a movie is like a whole other avenue.

[02:11:54] How did you react?

[02:11:55] Well, I was working a lot as extras in other films.

[02:12:00] I, I, this wasn't actually my first film.

[02:12:03] It was my first film as myself.

[02:12:04] I, I was a stunt double for an Ewok.

[02:12:08] I did.

[02:12:11] I did some, some work on the, the Star Wars, but I don't like to talk about that, of course.

[02:12:18] But no, I, I, before I became a star of film, I was, I was, you know, I was working

[02:12:24] at a, at a local restaurant and just paying the bills, you know?

[02:12:30] Yeah.

[02:12:31] Working nine to five.

[02:12:32] Yeah.

[02:12:32] Working nine to five.

[02:12:33] What a way to make a living.

[02:12:35] I know.

[02:12:35] Well, Hey, even stars got to start from somewhere.

[02:12:38] You know what I mean?

[02:12:39] Absolutely.

[02:12:39] I may have burned down a few Dairy Queens, but that's all in the past.

[02:12:46] It's all in the past.

[02:12:47] You don't think about it.

[02:12:47] Did you have like a small cameo role in Grease 2?

[02:12:50] I heard I could have sworn I saw you in Grease 2.

[02:12:52] You do not.

[02:12:53] You do not talk about that movie.

[02:12:54] I will.

[02:12:55] I will.

[02:12:56] Hold me back.

[02:12:59] Oh, show Pfeiffer haunts my dreams.

[02:13:01] Come on.

[02:13:03] She all she does for all of us.

[02:13:06] So, you know, you got to work with some pretty big stars over your career and especially

[02:13:10] in the, the goosebumps movie.

[02:13:12] I mean, Jack Black, he's a big name star.

[02:13:15] What was it like getting to work with him?

[02:13:16] Well, they're all very tall.

[02:13:20] Yeah.

[02:13:21] I mean, favorite.

[02:13:22] My favorite celebrity that I met, though, I have to say was at the premiere and that

[02:13:26] was Tony Hawk.

[02:13:28] And he taught me how to do to do an Ollie kick flip.

[02:13:33] I don't have a skateboard, though.

[02:13:34] So one day I'll get to try it out.

[02:13:39] I, you know, just working with those all of the stars.

[02:13:42] I think they they learned a lot from me, most importantly.

[02:13:46] Um, and, uh, because of me and meeting my, uh, having to rise to my level, I think perhaps

[02:13:54] they became better performers.

[02:13:56] Yeah, definitely.

[02:13:57] I would assume so.

[02:13:58] I agree with this.

[02:14:00] Yeah, you can work.

[02:14:01] What was your favorite?

[02:14:03] Uh, what was your thinking about favorite thing about filming the movie?

[02:14:06] Oh, I liked I liked doing my own stunts.

[02:14:10] I like when they, uh, when they when they, uh, throw you around.

[02:14:14] That's kind of fun.

[02:14:16] I didn't know you did your own stunts.

[02:14:17] That's pretty.

[02:14:18] I do all my own stunts.

[02:14:20] Wow.

[02:14:21] Oh, impressive.

[02:14:23] It's hard to find a stunt man at my height.

[02:14:26] Yes.

[02:14:27] I mean, I mean, it must have hurt that when, uh, Stein kicked you into the tree.

[02:14:34] Yeah, I mean, I think maybe it hurt, but I used that as in my, uh, in my performance.

[02:14:39] Okay.

[02:14:40] So by the time it's done, I've already forgotten about it, you know?

[02:14:43] Yeah.

[02:14:45] So, you know, what, what, what would you say are like your acting inspirations?

[02:14:51] Like what inspired you to become, uh, the actor you are today?

[02:14:55] Oh, the actor that I am today.

[02:14:57] Well, I, I, I've watched a lot of old films and watched, you know, the greats, uh, Frankenstein,

[02:15:05] uh, Dracula, uh, uh, Michelle Pfeiffer.

[02:15:09] She's also very scary.

[02:15:12] Um, no, I, I, I, I like to, uh, think I model myself a bit after the, uh, the, the classic monsters of years gone by.

[02:15:21] Yeah, absolutely.

[02:15:23] Yeah, absolutely.

[02:15:23] And I mean, you're surrounded by the, you know, the goosebumps monsters.

[02:15:27] And actually my next question is, uh, what would you say are some of your favorite monsters in the goosebumps books?

[02:15:35] Oh, not just the film.

[02:15:37] Oh, you're the podcast.

[02:15:39] We've got to dig deep, huh?

[02:15:40] Yep.

[02:15:41] Uh, let's see.

[02:15:42] Uh, you know, I really, I really do enjoy the lawn gnomes.

[02:15:46] Um, I stand on their head to reach the tall shelves.

[02:15:50] Uh, but from the books, I, I, I've got to say one of my favorite creatures is, uh, is, is the, the guy that don't go in the basement guy that with the great hands.

[02:16:01] Oh yeah.

[02:16:03] Uh, the stay out of the basement, the Dr. Brewer.

[02:16:06] Yeah.

[02:16:06] He's a really good one.

[02:16:07] He's a hand model, you know, really?

[02:16:11] Yes.

[02:16:12] Yes.

[02:16:13] He's got the hands for it.

[02:16:15] Absolutely.

[02:16:16] Yeah.

[02:16:17] And I mean, uh, you said that Michelle Pfeiffer, you know, scares you, but like what actresses are you?

[02:16:25] Oh, I love, I love to watch all of the new movies.

[02:16:28] Uh, but I hate get this.

[02:16:30] I hate a wooden performance.

[02:16:33] Oh, yeah.

[02:16:35] Uh, let's see.

[02:16:36] I would love to work with, oh, I don't know, Benedict Cumberbatch or Tom Hiddleston or, I don't know, maybe Zendaya.

[02:16:46] I could be the new Spider-Man.

[02:16:49] Yeah.

[02:16:49] I could be on that one.

[02:16:51] Yeah.

[02:16:51] You could be the new Spider-Man.

[02:16:53] I think they're, you know, if they ever look for another person, Tom Holland's getting a little, getting a little older.

[02:16:59] I can pretend to be British and pretend to be an American.

[02:17:03] Of course, Goosebumps 3 is what we would very much like to see you in next.

[02:17:08] Absolutely.

[02:17:08] And I hope that I would have a romantic role in a third film.

[02:17:13] Ooh.

[02:17:14] Perhaps work around a certain someone, you know?

[02:17:18] Yeah.

[02:17:18] Oh, Mary.

[02:17:19] Mary Ellen, maybe.

[02:17:21] Mary Ellen, perhaps.

[02:17:22] Oh, yeah.

[02:17:24] The Haunted Mask.

[02:17:26] The Haunted Mask.

[02:17:27] No, the Haunted Mask.

[02:17:29] Look, we're on good terms, but I really don't want to.

[02:17:32] Oh, I'm sorry to hear that, Sleppy.

[02:17:34] Yeah.

[02:17:35] I keep bumping into them at Spirit Halloween and it gets weird.

[02:17:38] Yeah.

[02:17:39] I can imagine.

[02:17:40] So, you know, you got to appear in a pretty scary movie, Goosebumps, you know, what is probably

[02:17:48] your favorite horror film or favorite horror villain?

[02:17:52] Horror villain.

[02:17:54] Oh, very good.

[02:17:56] Gosh, there's so many of them.

[02:17:58] I like the giant plant from Little Shop of Horrors.

[02:18:03] Oh.

[02:18:04] The style, the swagger, the way to command a room.

[02:18:08] Yeah.

[02:18:09] I think the Audrey 2's got it pretty figured out in terms of scares.

[02:18:15] Yeah, absolutely.

[02:18:16] And, you know, I personally really think Chucky is a great horror villain, wouldn't you say?

[02:18:24] I don't want to talk about Chucky.

[02:18:27] Okay.

[02:18:28] All right.

[02:18:28] We'll move on.

[02:18:30] So that makes me think that maybe Chucky got your, took your role, you know?

[02:18:38] I think.

[02:18:39] Chucky came back and they were like, yeah, let's make another slappy that's even freakier.

[02:18:45] And now I'm out of a job.

[02:18:48] That's a shame.

[02:18:49] What do you feel about some of those other puppets that have taken a slappy role from you?

[02:18:54] Yeah.

[02:18:55] Well, see, see again.

[02:19:02] My apologies.

[02:19:03] This wouldn't happen if I was working more.

[02:19:06] Um, yes, I, I am quite, uh, disturbed that, uh, dolls like Megan are taking the spotlight

[02:19:14] and they're going, they're going mainstream with the more spooky, creepy, grotesque thing.

[02:19:21] Come on.

[02:19:21] I can be catsome and scary.

[02:19:24] You know what I mean?

[02:19:24] Yeah, no, you can definitely be scary.

[02:19:27] They should, you should be in all those movies and roles.

[02:19:30] That's what I'm saying.

[02:19:32] Yeah.

[02:19:32] They should just make a movie called slappy.

[02:19:34] So Megan, just slappy.

[02:19:36] Yeah.

[02:19:36] Yes.

[02:19:37] I can do those tick tock.

[02:19:38] Megan.

[02:19:40] Yeah.

[02:19:40] I'll do the floss.

[02:19:43] I'll do the whatever they are.

[02:19:45] H O T D.

[02:19:46] Yo G O.

[02:19:47] I'll do all of them.

[02:19:48] I don't care.

[02:19:49] Okay.

[02:19:49] If you had to go up against any of them, would you, would you want it to be a slappy verse

[02:19:54] Chucky slappy verse Megan slappy verse the leprechaun?

[02:19:59] I don't know.

[02:19:59] I want to go slappy versus slappy.

[02:20:02] If we're being honest.

[02:20:03] Yeah.

[02:20:03] Oh, okay.

[02:20:04] It can be only one.

[02:20:06] It can be only one.

[02:20:07] It could be, it could be all three slappies going up against each other in a movie.

[02:20:11] Or the slappies team up to go up against Chucky.

[02:20:16] Yeah.

[02:20:17] Yes.

[02:20:18] Yes.

[02:20:18] That's the movie.

[02:20:19] I want to see.

[02:20:19] All three of us.

[02:20:23] What was your favorite scene to film in the, in the goosebumps movies?

[02:20:27] Would you say?

[02:20:28] The goosebumps, anything in the car.

[02:20:31] I love to be driven around, especially if the car is autonomous like that.

[02:20:36] Yeah.

[02:20:36] So, uh, the, anything in the car is great.

[02:20:38] I could have snacks.

[02:20:39] I could listen to the radio.

[02:20:41] It was, I enjoyed the car quite a bit.

[02:20:44] Have you kept in contact with any of the people that you worked on in the movie?

[02:20:51] Well, there's this one guy that keeps following me around that I have no choice but to be in

[02:20:56] contact with.

[02:20:57] Uh, but, uh, you know, me and the monsters, we get together.

[02:21:00] We have like a Christmas thing.

[02:21:03] Uh, there's a group text.

[02:21:05] We, we're still in touch, but, uh, we don't see each other as much as we used to, I suppose.

[02:21:10] Yeah.

[02:21:11] Yeah.

[02:21:11] Have you watched the movie since it, uh, first premiered?

[02:21:14] What do you think looking back on it?

[02:21:16] I refuse to rewatch my work.

[02:21:18] I'm a very critical.

[02:21:20] I, I refuse to, uh, look back on things because I'm a very, uh, might be very hard on myself.

[02:21:26] You know, I'm a perfectionist in that way.

[02:21:29] So I've not watched, uh, the film since, uh, we completed it.

[02:21:33] Uh, I saw it at the premiere and applauded for myself.

[02:21:36] I cried, but, uh, since then I have not, uh, I've not seen the movie now.

[02:21:41] Oh, I completely understand.

[02:21:43] Yeah.

[02:21:44] Absolutely.

[02:21:45] Well, I guess one more question for you, Slappy.

[02:21:48] Uh, you know, I charged by the question, you know?

[02:21:54] Okay.

[02:21:55] Well, I'm racking up those points, I guess, but, uh, no, uh, would you ever be interested

[02:22:00] in a third Goosebumps movie?

[02:22:04] When do we start?

[02:22:05] Uh, as soon as possible.

[02:22:07] As soon as we can write together the money.

[02:22:09] Yes, please.

[02:22:10] Let's do it.

[02:22:11] Let's go right now.

[02:22:12] Yeah.

[02:22:12] Let's do it right now.

[02:22:13] Would you like to work with in a third Goosebumps movie?

[02:22:16] What monsters would I like to work with?

[02:22:17] Well, I've already mentioned Mary Ellen.

[02:22:20] Um, I would, you know, I would love to work with the creeps.

[02:22:25] I haven't gotten a chance to, to call all my creeps out.

[02:22:28] You know?

[02:22:29] Um, I like the creeps quite a bit there.

[02:22:32] They're, they're, they're very fun, but they're always prank calling me.

[02:22:35] Yeah.

[02:22:36] It can be a little, uh, silly at times with their prank callings.

[02:22:41] Yes.

[02:22:42] And, uh, you know, the scarecrows, maybe the pumpkin heads, they would be cool to bring

[02:22:47] back in a new movie.

[02:22:48] Any of those guys that are taller than me, they can reach things.

[02:22:51] I'm pro.

[02:22:53] Yep.

[02:22:53] Absolutely.

[02:22:54] Well, Hey, Slappy, you know, it's an honor to be able to talk with you as a star of your

[02:23:00] nature, uh, joining us here.

[02:23:01] So we appreciate you, uh, dropping by and, uh, talking some, uh, Goosebumps movie stuff

[02:23:07] with us.

[02:23:07] The pleasure is all yours.

[02:23:10] Yep.

[02:23:11] It sure is.

[02:23:12] Get me out of here.

[02:23:12] Somebody pick me up.

[02:23:14] Pick me up.

[02:23:15] We'll see you later.

[02:23:16] Slappy.

[02:23:24] What a guy.

[02:23:26] So what I wanted to show you is I found these at the thrift store the other day.

[02:23:30] Oh, wow.

[02:23:30] And I've just added these into my collection.

[02:23:33] Oh, they're really cool.

[02:23:35] You have the stickers in there.

[02:23:37] Are the stickers in there?

[02:23:40] So yeah, I got all those too.

[02:23:42] Oh, nice.

[02:23:44] Nice.

[02:23:44] Nice.

[02:23:44] I don't know what I missed.

[02:23:46] I'm sorry.

[02:23:46] I was gone for a high.

[02:23:47] Yeah.

[02:23:47] You know, the conversation was the weirdest thing happened while you were gone, but,

[02:23:52] uh, it's not important.

[02:23:54] Okay.

[02:23:54] Yeah.

[02:23:55] Yeah.

[02:23:55] We just, you know, just, you know, just hanging out with some, there's some guy.

[02:24:00] Yeah.

[02:24:01] Some guy.

[02:24:04] Well, you know, we've done a lot here tonight and I think it's unfortunately time to call

[02:24:10] the night here on the Goosebumps crew podcast, but Avery, Hey, thank you so much for joining

[02:24:15] us tonight.

[02:24:15] It was an absolute pleasure to take a stroll down memory lane for the Goosebumps movie.

[02:24:20] And, uh, you know, nine years.

[02:24:22] It's been crazy.

[02:24:24] I appreciate you having me.

[02:24:26] I, I, I, I forgotten about a lot of the things you curated there for me.

[02:24:30] So that, that was, that was awesome.

[02:24:32] I appreciate that.

[02:24:33] Absolutely.

[02:24:33] And we're happy to open those vaults back up and, uh, take a look because, you know,

[02:24:38] we like looking back on things in the Goosebumps universe and, uh, you know, hopefully maybe

[02:24:43] another Goosebumps movie isn't, uh, off in the near future.

[02:24:47] They got the new show out, but you know, maybe we can take a look back on the, the works

[02:24:52] of RL Stein for a third movie, but, uh, the multiverse is a thing.

[02:24:57] Yes.

[02:24:58] Yeah.

[02:24:58] Into the Stein verse.

[02:25:00] Can we just, can we complete the trilogy?

[02:25:03] Come on.

[02:25:03] One more.

[02:25:04] We need one more movie.

[02:25:04] We need the trilogy.

[02:25:06] Come on.

[02:25:07] But, uh, but that is going to do it for tonight's episode of the Goosebumps crew podcast.
